European hunters are responsible for the vast majority of endangered cheetahs killed for trophies in recent years, according to a damning new report that accuses the EU of enabling the decline of one of Africa’s most iconic species.

An investigation by the Wildlife & Conservation Foundation (WCF) found that 81 per cent of all cheetah trophies recorded globally between 2018 and 2023 were imported into Europe.

In total, 397 skins and skulls were brought into 26 European countries over the five-year period, despite studies showing that its global population has declined by up to 51% between 2008 and 2023.

Cheetahs now occupy just nine per cent of their historical range. Roughly 3,500 survive in southern Africa, while 2,102 are found in the east and just 419 in the west, centre and north of the continent. A small and highly vulnerable population also persists in Iran.

The Americans and Europeans happen to be the largest groups of trophy hunters of endangered animals, and it is important to create awareness programmes on the importance of animal welfare and ecological conservation of nature.

Interestingly, the FBI considers cruelty to animals as part of the Macdonald criteria, which determines the propensity amongst children for violent tendencies and future serial offenses.

The European Union is the second largest importer of hunting trophies from internationally regulated mammals (“regulated” means the species are considered at-risk or nearly at-risk of extinction by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora), behind the United States, which imports more trophies from such species than any other country.

It's imperative that governments and travel companies come to understand that trophy hunting is both devastating to animal welfare and conservation and increasingly out of touch with reality. Killing iconic animals whose populations are already under serious pressure can have far-reaching damaging biological and ecological impacts in habitats already riddled with other environmental crises.
