What should I do?

5 posts in this topic

In 2021, in this forum, I posted asking for advice regarding my situation. At the time, I was 18 years old. I'm originally from Somalia and have been watching Leo since I was 15 years old.  At the time, I moved to Turkey and asked about what I should do to never go back to Somalia. I remember Leo saying, “Don’t hang out around losers.” Fast forward to now, I'm in the UK. I came here as a student about two years ago. I graduated and was able to get a post study work visa for two years. It’s going to run out next year. So far, I haven't been able to get a job that would sponsor me. The graduate job market is tough, especially if you are an international student. I don't want to go back to Somalia as I have left islam and no one in my family knows it. Most Somalis are in stage red or purple, the enlightened ones are in stage blue. I don't want to claim asylum as it’s really a long process, and it’s not guaranteed I will get it. It feels like I have worked so hard for nothing. What should I do? I really have explored all my options, but nothing seems to be working so far. I don't know anyone in a similar situation. What advice would you give me?

I’m not sure about your timeline but I think, if you were to keep documentation of some kind of job or paying for accommodation and bills in the country, after 5 years you can apply to be a citizen of the country. Would there be a way to extend the visas to get to 5 years?

what did you study? Is there other work you can do in the meantime to support yourself while looking for something else?

@zaki What is your degree in and can you get a visa for another country? You could go work in Thailand or something and build a business online with cheap cost of living.

Ah ok. I’m in Ireland and it’s 5 years here. My mom moved here 5 years ago and she’s going through the process next year. She was married to Irish citizen and lived/worked here for 30 years but because she moved to Scotland for close to 20 years they refused to see her as a citizen so she had to start again.
