A massive magnitude 8.7–8.8 earthquake struck off Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula on July 29, prompting tsunami alerts across the Pacific—including the U.S. West Coast, Alaska, Hawaii, and parts of British Columbia

Public Safety Guidance:

Warning areas: Residents in Northern California’s coast from Cape Mendocino north should seek high ground or move inland immediately due to potential for dangerous coastal flooding and strong currents 

 

Advisory areas: In areas under advisory (including L.A., other Southern California locations), stay out of the water, avoid beaches and harbors, and stay alert to updates from local authorities 

Be aware that tsunami events often consist of multiple waves, which can continue

over 10–36 hours

Do not go to beaches or waterfronts.

 

If you're in Northern California's warning zones, prepare to evacuate inland or seek higher ground now.

 

If you're in an advisory zone (like Los Angeles), be cautious: stay off piers, harbors, and beaches, and monitor local emergency alerts.

 

Follow instructions from local and state emergency management agencies.Expect the tsunami threat to persist into early morning, and understand that the largest waves may arrive well after the first wave.

Usually when they give a warning nothing happens. The real thing tends to be an unexpected shock. Mostly the animals seem to sense when something big is coming.
