The reason you cannot debate religion is because psychologically people need to develop a healthy functional, “fictional” identity to function in the world. And guess what? Religion plays a major role in that. Similar to gender and ethnicity or race. That’s why people get very touchy on the topic of gender fluidity, homosexuality, multiculturalism, different traditions, religions, customs and cuisines... People feel comfortable and at home with what they’re accustomed to, and challenging religion or gender identity or cultural norms and heteronormativity is threatening to their comfort, safety, identity, survival and personhood. 
Even challenging the notion of sanity is threatening because people need to feel sane and when you start delving into the relativity of sanity, people start calling you insane, which is just a trojan horse and a red herring from facing the reality of the illusion of sanity vs insanity.

People don’t recognize how much their identity plays a role in their emotions, opinions, ideologies, reactions etc. It’s like the identity survives on precisely unawareness of it.
