  17. Alcohol's widespread acceptance over substances like mushrooms and DMT likely stems from its deep cultural integration and compatibility with existing social structures. While alcohol provides temporary escape without fundamentally challenging worldviews, psychedelics often prompt profound perspective shifts that might lead people to question established norms and systems. This partially explains why wealthy business owners, politicians, and industry leaders who benefit from things staying the same (homeostasis) have historically supported alcohol's legality while discouraging and shaming research into substances that might inspire widespread reconsideration of social hierarchies and consumerist values. Those who make money from alcohol, pharmaceuticals, and maintaining social dominance have little to no reason to fund studies of compounds that threaten their profits and power. Powerful people are high on control.
