  8. God and god Query: Is God an abstract and meaningless idea? Reply: At first I was puzzled by your question, because it sounded as though you were asking whether God exists -- but you didn’t word it that way, and besides, I know you do believe that God exists. From previous correspondence, I suspect that you are relaying a question from skeptical acquaintances whom you aren’t sure how to answer. So I’ve given some thought to what they might mean by suggesting to you that God is an “abstract and meaningless idea.” Perhaps the difficulty is that the terms “God” and “god” are used in several different senses. Sometimes the term “god” is used for whatever it is to which someone gives his unconditional commitment. This is what we mean when we say of a greedy man, “His god is money.” There are lots of gods of this sort: Sex, Me, Power, Reputation, and so forth. Since almost anything might be someone’s “god” in the sense of unconditional commitment, I can see why someone might say that the term is meaningless. But if we ask what deserves unconditional commitment, there is only one answer, and that is the God whom we worship. Sometimes – although the term “god” itself is not often used in this way – people call themselves “religious” because they have elevated feelings. If, for example, they have feelings of awe when they look at the sky, they say they are “religious.” Since people may have elevated feelings about almost anything – from the Hubble Space Telescope to the Oprah Winfrey show -- in this sense too I can see why someone might say that terms such as “god” and “religious” are meaningless. But if the question is what ought to arouse our loftiest feelings, again there is only one answer: The Creator, whom we call God. Sometimes the term “god” is used for a being who has vast powers, like the beings of the Greek myths (or like Marvel comic book heroes). Though God is powerful, this is not what we mean by God. The “gods” of mythological were contingent beings like you and me. They didn’t have to exist; something would have had to cause them to exist. But the true God, as Christians understand Him, exists necessarily. He can’t not be. Those “gods” existed in the same way that you exist; they just had more of everything. But God is the answer to the question of why there is something and not rather nothing – why anything at all exists apart from Him. Those “gods” were products of human imagination. But there is, and can be, only one First Being. God, then, is not a meaningless abstraction, but the Being above all other beings. I can think of one more thing your acquaintances might mean in saying that God is a meaningless abstraction. They may mean that whether He exists or He doesn’t exist, it makes no difference; life goes on the same way. But if God is what Christian faith claims He is, then this is far from true: God is not only the First Cause on which all other being depends, but the First Meaning on which all other meaning depends. Apart from Him, life is absurd. He is the greatest and most praiseworthy thing. Surely something is wrong with us if we cannot admire what is infinitely greater than ourselves. Since He is the supreme and uncreated Good, we depend on Him even to put the goods of this life in right order. Without His providence, we are constantly tempted to do evil so that good will result. Without His grace, we cannot be forgiven our wrongdoing. What is impersonal cannot forgive; morality, as such, has a heart of stone. Without the same grace, we cannot be healed of our brokenness. Moral discipline can accomplish something, and that is good, but eventually it hits a wall. Without the same grace, we cannot make sense of our suffering, because we cannot offer it to be united with His sacrifice for us. Finally, even in the unlikely event that we have all this world offers, we are compelled to ask, “Is this all there is?” That which cannot be found in this world must be found out of this world. In the vision of His face is that perfect fulfillment which leaves nothing further to be desired. jbudziszewski's blog Copyright © J. Budziszewski. Site information. RSS feed.
  9. God as an abstraction is easy, as a direct experience is another level of mindfuckery.
  10. @Shodburrito America is in serious trouble. It's now a danger to the world. It's now a danger to itself. If anyone believes that everything will work out in the end, they are in denial. If they are waiting for the Lord to mend what is wrong, God will not help us? . We help ourselves and others.
  11. Hey all you stable geniuses out there: Define “Woke”. Please be specific.

  20. Well, I know we all know his position. What I see as value in this videos is to see the sneaky language, and study self deception. Of course also trying to listen with discernment and at same time noticing our own ego trying to be biased in favor or against Overall is just Jordan Being Jordan, nothing new here.
  21. Take a good study in a Book from Paul Tomassi. The name of the Bool is LOGIC. Remember leo saying that he studies deep in epistemology. For me this book Logic may do miracles for people still in need for Fundamentals. And of course going beyond Logic Trancend and Integrating.
  22. @LordFall you would love to read Allan Bloom. Here is a sentence from his book: Picture a thirteen-year-old boy sitting in the living room of his family home doing his math assignment while wearing his Walkman headphones or watching MTV. He enjoys the liberties hard won over centuries by the alliance of philosophic genius and political heroism, consecrated by the blood of martyrs; he is provided with comfort and leisure by the most productive economy ever known to mankind; science has penetrated the secrets of nature in order to provide him with the marvelous, lifelike electronic sound and image reproduction he is enjoying. And in what does progress culminate? A pubescent child whose body throbs with orgasmic rhythms; whose feelings are made articulate in hymns to the joys of onanism or the killing of parents; whose ambition is to win fame and wealth in imitating the drag-queen who makes the music. In short, life is made into a nonstop, commercially prepackaged masturbational fantasy. Allan Bloom, The Closing of the American Mind Contemplate what is his Bias
  23. I want to add on this thread also a book I am reading from Nigel Biggar. The book is " Colonialism a Moral Reckogning" I got the book first thinking it would be about Anti-colonialism, but the book is actually defending Colonial Empires and somehow sugarcoating the consequences of Slavery etc.. I will take a look on it as a exercice of perspective taking. And having in mind that perpectives can be valid but not having the same High consciousness level. The author start defending Cecil Rhodes, a colonialism tha had a big impact on África history. The bias is that Cecil was Anglican and Nigel Biggar is also Anglican. Funny.

  25. Nice you put this here now. i was just digesting all the thing being said by all sort of people about all that is happening now in America. And it came to me that although what many people say may have some piece of truth or perpespective, the real truth is that America is a complex ecosystem, and we love to over-simplify complexity in order to avoid frying our little daily energy. So in the end a lot is lost in objectivity. I take for exemple my body. If I am having some health problem I can sit and wonder for years what is going on wrong. Or I can make exams, check imbalances in my nutrient intake and exercise, lack of sun, limphatic system, nervous system regulation, emotions, chackas balanced etc.. overall the good health can be achieved not in perfection but enogth to be considered good and functional. In the case of a body of a country the question is: How can we be the most objetive possible? What metrics to pay attention, of course not all can be quantified, but what I mean is, to be able to see through noise we would need to be first super objective, and more, having in account the data we dont have acess. Without objectivity we get lost in a ocean of opinions, and second to a video of Ezra Klein, one of the tatics of this folks is to confuse by overflowing the field with a lot to process.
