Another sticky point is that you are operating within the materialistic paradigm. You assume you are a human which as an epiphenomena generates consciousness and then you can become conscious of things and maybe animals may or may not have consciousness and so on. This whole paradigm is limited and mostly wrong. You are not a human being which is conscious You are consciousness which is aware of a human being, this screen, lights, sounds, space and so on In other words, you are not a human being existing But Existence being a human and everything else With this right understanding Consciousness makes much more sense and so does the mystics outrageous claims

Think of it this way, your life is like a pyramid of needs. If your pyramid is like a cheese it cannot hold anything properly, so when you pour water, it will eventually leak and it only takes one leak for that to happen So satisfy categorically these needs for you to arrive to spirituality. What happens is that you enter into states where you are in self-trascendence but it doesn't hold as your baseline experience because the roots aren't strong enough to hold it. Till you don't satisfy your needs for sex, wife, family, friends as well as those of good communication and self-actualization no higher sustained consciousness is possible. So just by understanding the following your doubt is fully resolved.
