  1. If you couldnt afford your current lifestyle, would you find yourself or your effort to bring food to the table insufficient or lacking?
  2. Ah Joker. He is a man who wants to put a smile on everyone's face after one night that his crazy father gets a little crazier than usual. Her mother gets a kitchen knife to defend herself and as he snaps it off her hands he noticed that his son, the Joker is looking at them horrified. He walks over to his son and asks him "why so serious?". He cant answer, so he asks again "why so serious?!" and sticks the knife in his mouth, slicing and giving him his permanent smile This is just one of the origin stories Joker uses of himself from time to time. Sometimes to psychologically scar people before giving them their permanent smile, sometimes to psychologically win them over for pity. And now to the Joker movie that is about to come out in a few days. Its an alternative view to his origin story, one in which he is raised from childhood by his mother to always put a smile on his face and laugh. His mothers prophecy to his future is that he will become world's best comedian, one who gets everyone to laugh. He tries for years doing different kinds of gigs and even trying to entertain people while doing short term jobs that have nothing to do with comedy. He keeps on trying to fulfill his mothers dream, but never gets anyone to laugh. But he's not someone to give up on trying, so he will find a way to make people laugh. Why does this movie strike fear in some people? People are claiming that this movie will encourage incels to start killing people for no reason, and I just don't see why. Call of Duty isn't turning veterans into murderers nor is any other videogame even though there was like 10 year period when people were afraid that videogames are raising boys to be murderers. Is there some other fear that strikes to there people's hearts which has caused them to roar in opposition?
  3. @2_spirit Lets imagine that 90% of the fans of Joker and other such villains that use psychology to cause terror would be angry at the society and depressive. Wouldnt a movie of a villain they can identify as lower their tendencies to act in the real world? Wouldnt these people more likely numb down after seeing their wildest fantasies come true rather than spark their passion to act on their suffering in societal destructive ways? Personally I see that majority of Joker fans are people who love to see psychology used as a terror weapon. Thats a type of villain that the society has refused to provide us for thousands of years. All we got is black and white fantasy, like Sauron is ultimate evil or Thanos is ultimate evil, or Superman is ultimate good. Movie like The Joker is a great step towards more complex stories which dont rely on backgrounds that can be summed up in "Alien from another planet" or "My dad forced me to smile" or "USA turned a rifleman into supersoldier". Joker feels like a human gone nuts, not like an alien gone nuts. This is also why I also love batman, his background is complex too. I guess it could be that people are afraid of a villain whom they dont understand, or they identify with too much? Like if they came up with a supervillain that was exactly like Batman but turned evil because he had trouble growing up because of depression and anxieties, that would probably cause a huge backlash
  4. So, long story short I have a muscle pinch in my back caused by spinal disc herniation and while I was sitting in sauna, I noticed that my abdomen is slightly tilted. I then used my hands to lift my left asscheek off the chair and straighten my abdomen, and then I felt how a muscle on the left side of my lower back relaxed, which caused my right leg to begin going numb. So good! My subconscious is doing its job tensing up the muscle in order to prevent further damage so my spine can heal. I stopped trying to relax the muscle. But then I remembered how in a book "way of the warrior" a fictional Japanese Zen master said how he noticed that his kidney was acting up so he flushed it by drinking some kind of traditional remedy. Then it came to my mind that some use martial arts to mindfully inspect their body and learn it, maybe to build awareness of their muscles? And then I thought; "I can say which muscles are tensed when I look at my posture, straighten it and relax, but I can not close my eyes and use my awareness to tell which muscles are tensed. Is it possible to build enough awareness to simply notice which muscles are tensed up?" I feel like this kind of awareness -along with building core strenght- would lower my changes of breaking my back again in the future. If it is possible, how would one practice it? Simply by doing the mindfulness meditation? Working out mindfully? Mindful Tai Chi?
  5. Like sugar, phones and about 100 other things the society would do better without? If you are developing yourself then yeah, maybe. But the general people? I doubt that. Edit: isnt lack of awareness about tolerating hazardous things anyway?
  6. I wouldnt be so certain. Just wait for the day when 4k/8k high fps quality is common in movies and TV series, not to forget streaming gaming services which I believe will be the next big thing in gaming, and people will forget the warnings about 5g the moment they subscribe to Netflix Plus or Sony Playstation Streaming and find out that they either need to pay 50 dollars extra a month for adequate cable connection or update the mobile plan to 5g
  7. @DrewNows Would you recommend Kriya Yoga for this purpose? @Nahm Funny thing, this video is what brought back my back pains. I never fully recovered from my lower back problems, so the tensions became permanent. When I began to relax my lower back while driving a car, it didn't take long after that for the herniated disc to pop again. It was my own fault tho, since I never really strenghtened my lower core muscles like the fyseotherapeut instructed. I "threw away my scrutches before my leg was healed" Thanks for for reminding me that video exists, gonna rewatch it right away! Edit: Oh boy im tense @Serotoninluv How does that exactly work? By doing shamanic breathing with a goal in mind? Im a little afraid of doing shamanic breathing. I guess im afraid of what waits for me in the shadows @MAYA EL Sounds cool! Did you build awareness without really trying, or was mindfulness practice a part of your martial arts school? I practiced Hapkido for 1 year before my back pains came back, but it takes a looong time before the breath work etc come into the practice in that art
  8. Im gonna throw my 2 cents on this topic. I live in Finland, and I have chronic back pain. Before I got into workforce and got into the healthcare program of my company, going to doctor for my backpain was a hell. When I called for an appointment to the governmental doctor, it would take from 2 weeks up to 2 months to get an appointment. Then when you actually get to the doctors office, you have to beg for medications because the public doctors are very reluctant in giving opioids for your pain because of the people who use them wrongly, but private doctor has no problem with prescribing you medication that actually helps. I have gone to the public doctor for my back pain for 3 times. Every time I had to wait for 2 weeks up to 2 months for an appointment. A few months ago my back pain went through the roof once again, and immediately I got an appointment with my company's private health care. The same day I called. He prescribed me the pills and I have never in my life recovered from the crippling back pains as fast as I did with the help of that medication that I never got from public healthcare. Public healthcare is great for those who are not privileged to having a private healthcare plan, but at least where I live, public healthcare's quality is terrible compared to private healthcare. Oh, and its even worse when it comes to public dental care btw. Much worse. EDIT: On the sidenote, free college made it possible for me to have that company healthcare plan
  9. @Serotoninluv I still dont fully understand what you mean. Is there a book perhaps that would help understand, or do I learn this by following politics mindfully?
  10. Could you open up this to me? Im having hard time understanding why someone would claim something but then find problematic providing source? Wouldnt it be more productive for everyone to simply not claim something if you know that the other participant is going to cling on wanting a source? In my eyes this is the biggest difference between the right and the left in politics all around the world, and Im having so much difficult undertstanding why it is practiced. I mean, if you know that the people on right love traditional argumenting and clings on statistics, then why would you purposely go against the grain?
  11. I realize that what Im going to say here is kind of centrist and Im trying to question centrist way of thinking but... Couldn't the trump and anti-trump sides in this thread at least try to treat each other like adult human beings? Im not trying to sound smart but on multiple account in this thread someone has been asking for sources on a claim and then that source has not been provided despite multiple requests or the source is shit and at least once instead of providing a source, the asker has been ridiculed for not understanding and "not going to be understanding ". Please note the passive agressive emoticon. It makes me sick reading this Twitter level shit. Is this what actualized.org stands for? Acting like kindergardeners?
  12. It seems like many green people oppose nuclear energy. But why? I have pondered if its because of fear. There is Fukushima and Chernobyl. Yes, they were devastating disasters but both were caused by human error, not nuclear energy itself being dangerous. Another argument I have heard against nuclear energy is that the waste lasts for centuries. Thing is, we already have developed technology that can use nuclear waste to make more energy. Also the waste is not environmentally dangerous when sealed off safely. Use of coal for energy has grown in Germany as they close their nuclear power plants. Why is this better? Why is it better to tear down landscapes in search of coal, then burning that coal and releasing huge amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere while a single 12 foot long rod in a nuclear reactor lasts for 6 years? Is there something Im not seeing that someone on the green sees?
  13. @outlandish NP! Thats why we are here on Actualized.org
  14. @outlandish You are correct. My points were based on something I've heard often in the past, and on sources that after more thoroughly inspection turned out not to be based on any good research. Apologies
  15. Funny thing, a few weeks ago I tried out Minecraft VR and had an though experiment "If I was plugged into a machine which allowed me to play Minecraft VR forever without need to excrete or eat or drink, then I could explore a world forever, I could build my dream home and do everything that I love and want for the rest of the life!" That was a scary though. To explore forever with no need for food or drink. A world where I would already be the king of all skills but creative building. What would be the point? There would not be point, I wouldn't really be living. To explore the universe Star Trek style is one thing, but to explore a world which I already know with no challenges, that's scary af! We fear the unknown, we work to hone our skills but removing the unknown and becoming a master of a skill in an instance? That scares me.
  16. Wind turbines are not perfect either in their current state. They haven't really passed the "prototype" phase of innovation yet, front windows have. I think its a good idea to address the problems while we still develop wind turbines. My worries are not in the momentary change in environment, but the long term effects. So, I agree that blades killing birds isn't a big deal. However turbines do cause noise pollution which disturbs and changes mating calls of birds. If you know how mating calls work, then you probably agree that its pretty good change that those birds become unable to breed with birds grown away from wind turbines, and in 100 years we might be seeing whole new species of birds that live only near wind turbines. Then we come to water dams that cause disaster around salmon and other fish that use streams of water to move between ocean and inland, which disturbes nature and in at least one case I know, destroyed the livelihood of a family from native Sami people in Lapland as they relied on salmon which died off in their region due to a power dam, but that family's cries went to deaf ears. There is also the problem in manufacturing of wind turbines. At the moment SF6 is used as insulating gas in the wind turbines which is 23.5 tonnes more potent than CO2, which means that 1 kilogram of SF6 in the atmosphere is equal to 23.5 tonnes of CO2, and leaking of SF6 is rapidly increasing in Europe. My point here is that we need to address the problems with renewable energy. All of these problems I mentioned are under research and can be fixed, but for better long term solution we should develop these technologies first before we go and replace majority of power production with them. Until then, solar energy is our safest bet when it comes to renewables
  17. I love the way how Greta speaks. She overacts so much! I used to fantasize about speaking to large amount of people about political things that touched me when I was a kid and in my imagination I would overact just as badly as she Thats why I know it comes from her heart
  18. @CreamCat At this moment batteries are not that effective to put into commercial use. They have been researched and implemented, yes, but they don't have nearly enough capacity for our current needs. One idea is to recycle electric car batteries and put them into these big power banks to store energy, but when that can be enough to store renewable energy in countries that require relatively little heating to survive the winter, not every country is that fortunate. Collecting energy from solar windows in big cities, and as @remember mentioned sea waves are both promising technologies but they only add to our current renewable energy, not solve the problems that come if we depend too much on renewable energy to reliably power our homes. Batteries develop very slowly, and every year someone comes up with "brilliant invention" that is supposed to revolutionize our energy storage. Yet we still use bulky lead batteries to store relatively small amount of energy just to start our cars. Lead battery was invented in 1859. @Leo Gura I had to google that myself to believe. Japan can be so backwards place in some things... This is the exact reason why we need more international regulation when it comes to nuclear power! I also found out that Japan is not the only country saving pennies to avoid proper preventative maintenance on their nuclear facilities I must admit that even coal is better choice over nuclear energy when proper maintenance is dismissed. At least the shit that coal burning spews can be collected with technology, radiation is much more trickier when it comes to cleaning it out of environment As someone who has been studying and working in the field that is not focused but heavily relies on energy production and maintenance of said equipment for 6 years, its shocking to find out this kind of news about the neglect going on around nuclear power plants when in my experience the maintenance of "lesser" sources of energy is extremely strict, regulated and done properly where I come from I'll have to look into this, but I still think nuclear energy is best of the bad options when implemented properly
  19. No drawbacks? Do tell me how we can use renewable energy to heat 1.4 million homes when the sun dont come up for 23 hours (Opposite of nightless night), the weather is -20 celsius and wind goes stagnant. Unless we jump huge leaps in technology and develope reasonable ways to store renewable energy to be used almost all through winter, then renewable energy just wont cut it. Using electric cars to store energy is a good idea, but not enough if we need to rely on stored energy for months. Fusion reactor would work, but according to my father we have been hyping a breakthrough in that technology since 70's so despite the recent advances, Im still a little skeptic about it. EDIT: As someone who works in the field Im open to suggestions how we could resolve this conundrum. It would be genuinenly amazing if the country I live in could switch to usinc renewable energy alone! @Leo Gura I understand the idea behind this. Im also for renewable energy when it does not harm the environment, but why is it that in environmental rallies focus is on nuclear energy and not on more harmful means of energy production like dams and coal energy?
  20. Both Chernobyl and Fukushima disasters could have been avoided with stricter regulation. Chernobyl was caused due to tests done without safety systems being online, Fukushima was caused by neglect on maintenance and the fact, that the reactor was built on tsunami area. When ships sinks or otherwise causes an environmental disaster, we dont demand a ban on every ship. We take action to make ships safer. For example, double bottom ensures that when the ship's hull is punctured, the double bottom stops oil leakage to the ocean. Then again, when I put myself in the perspective of someone who has been green all their life and does not even have a basic idea of the regulations that run industrial world or basic idea of energy production ("Electricity comes form the wall" type of people), that would be a very good reason why nuclear is a nono since the rare occasion of devastating human error makes an accident that is emotionally devastating to majority of people in the world. "When does it happen to my local power plant? What if it explodes? What if one day I come home from work and my children and I am incenirated by nuclear explosion?" Makes me wonder if that position could be changed with education.
  21. One of the most ridicilous accusations were that the female actresses were forced to spend 2 weeks in forest without showers etc as a sign of misogny. This was one 2 week period while the male actors spent more periods, one of them lasting over 2 months and somehow they made this classify as "misogny" Legal action against the people who made this shit up is still going, however nothing can repair the damage done. Honestly I feel like they wanted to kickstart #metoo in Finland by naming someone big but they did it in horrific way. Edit: As we agree to agree, lets not hijack more of this thread.
  22. Hey Derek! Im not from scandinavia, but I am from a Nordic country. I hope that suffice When it comes to interpersonal culture, I would say that Helsinki in Finland is most "advanced" In this sense. "Big" cities in Finland are generally more tolerant to minorities and have more openly gays. Queers live mostly in Helsinki where they are more accepted. There is very little open racism or homophobia in Finland (excluding internet) and it manifests in a lot of talk, very little action. However, when someone in the minority group, especially muslims, get into scandals like there was Turku's stabbing or Oulu's childrape ring, racism towards those minorities then manifest in ways like looks on the street and avoiding to talk to them. Source: My muslim friend and co-worker. We do share #MeToo culture and I wouldn't call it "memeing" but a fucking witch hunt which sent our greatest movie director of all time to depression and killed his career. And yes I am butthurt of that. When it comes to relationships, I cant speak for Helsinki but I can speak for other "big" cities like Tampere and Oulu. Sadly the way men deal with problems in relationships is still very masculine, while female's way of dealing with problems is still very feminine. So no, they dont prioritize interpersonal feelings over logic. Helsinki could be different tho When it comes to spiritism, we are just now getting over the "young atheist" phase. Cultural spiritism was deemed paganism when Christianity came. I doubt spiritism is popular even in Helsinki yet. I cant think if a single spiritual teacher from Finland. I'd say the elderly are more on the stage blue, they are the ones that built the socialist values in Finland while the younger population is more on the orange and would love more capitalism. The young people are also bitter that the elderly paid practically zero of their own pensions and now the young people have to pay up what they didn't. Well, that was my 2 cents. Hope it helped!
  23. Yeah fuck the society! Lets all ditch the black plague vaccines and let it rush through the society killing 2/3 of the earths population Wait, we cant do that becaue black plague is already gone extinct! If we began vaccinating every child on earth when the polio vaccination was invented, there would not be polio anymore. People who oppose vaccines are making the society suffer, literally. More we use vaccines, less we need to use them
  24. Vaccines are not taken to protect yourself, they are taken to protect the society. Its kind of like yearly head lice epidemic. If we took every human in the world for 1 day and killed the lices, they would go to extinction or take a very long time to recover. Now there is people living with the parasite in every society 24/7 which is why the numbers explode every year. Its almost the same with vaccines. Difference is, if you take the vaccine you very likely wont ever get the disease. However, if too many dont take the vaccine, the disease is likely to mutate into a form that you are no longer immune to, then diseases like polio can spread like wildfire, just like head lice spread like wildfire every year. Vaccines are said to do harm, but probably less than not vaccinating
