Is it possible to be aware of intentional thinking?

I don't mean be aware of whatever randomly arise in your mind; I mean be aware of intentionally thinking to do some hard task. For example, planning and writing a university thesis.

In this scenario, is there a different between think and contemplate thinking?

When I drop all intentions it is easy to contemplate reality but when I have to do "mind tasks" I feel I lost aware of the present moment. To me it is like pushing in opposite directions: intentional thinking is desire to reach someplace and contemplation of present moment is the opposite.
