Contemplating 'Meaning' using a journal

1 post in this topic

I'm pretty new to contemplating, just did about 40 mins on my first topic: "What is meaning?".

Here is some of the stuff I got down ( I wouldn't want to bore you with every sentence and idea I wrote ), please let me know if I am falling into any traps or doing something wrong. I want to remove any bad habits before I get too into it.

My drink bottle beside me, is MEANT to be drank out of.

The word "Solar" on a poster I have means something 'of the sun'

Is meaning somethings fundamental reason for existing? However, both words and drink bottles are human creations.

Therefore, might meaning also be a human construct?

My meaning in life is to self-actualize and integrate this into a military career.

Is meaning something people use to justify the existence of things?

However, dogs seem to experience meaning.

If I was to yell at my dog, the yelling ( to my dog ) means aggression / danger.

And, as I look around my room as an observer, without identifying or thinking about any of the things I see, they do not have any meaning to me.

Possible answer:  Meaning is the correlation that is made between something and its fundamental purpose.

E.g:

  •  Me and my LP
  • A drink bottle and its role as a  container
  • A word, and the reason that word exists. E.g: "Scary" exists to describe something that may induce fear. Now, replace "exists to describe" with "meaning"
  • A man yelling at a dog, and the dog relating that to an act of aggression/danger. The meaning of yelling to a dog is danger / agression. ( I use dog as an example to debunk my idea that meaning must be a human construct )

Anyway, am I on the right track? Should I try to contemplate for longer so I can go deeper, or is this ok?

Any advice or pointers would be greatly appreciated!!
