Business, what is it?

Hi there,

Does anyone have any recommendations for any academic papers or books that explain what business actually is? I am looking for more a theoretical perspective. 

Most books are written from an experiential how to perspective which is great, practical and necessary but I am looking for a more in depth, foundational understanding.
