Kriya Yoga: is prior accomplishment in hatha yoga necessary?

3 posts in this topic

Hi,

I am keen to begin a kriya yoga practice. However, I'm concerned my body may not be ready for it.

Kriya yoga involves pranayama, right? I've heard that introducing pranayama before the body is prepared by hatha yoga practice can be problematic.

I've been practicing hatha yoga for about 3 years but have a lot of work to do. My body is exceptionally tight and I struggle with beginner poses.

If, for instance, it was important to be able to sit upright unsupported for an extended period of time to practice kriya yoga/ pranayama, it would be years before this was appropriate for me. My hips are so tight I can't stay comfortably like that for long (I meditate with my back against a wall for that reason).

I also wonder if part of the reason for Kriya Yoga's traditionally clandestine initiation culture is to do with judging readiness in one's existing yoga practice. How do I know I'm not trying to run before I can walk?

Does anyone have any thoughts?

No

Just follow the manual. Do not innovate or concoct your own stuff or your own problems.

You are God. You are Truth. You are Love. You are Infinity.

Ok thanks Leo, I've ordered the manual. Edit: watched your recent blog posts, very helpful. Looking forward to starting my practice :)
