Why are demons in TV are "Black Smoke"?

I don't believe in demons so far but I think a black smoke is a really good model for demons rather than a guy with red horns. Is there any religion or recourse supports that model?

Upon first glance, I believe that demons are so often represented as black smoke because of what it symbolizes.

Black:

• Evil
• Dark
• Sinister
• Scary
• Unknown

Smoke:

• Unpure
• Suffocative
• Blinding
