Microbial Noe's Arc in Switzerland

1 post in this topic

There's a project called the Microbiota Vault Initiative that's been quietly banking human microbiome samples as a hedge against what researchers call the "disappearing microbiota" — the loss of microbial diversity that comes with antibiotics, C-sections, formula feeding, and industrialized diets.

They've actually collected so far:

  • 1,204 human fecal specimens
  • 190 fermented food samples
  • From Benin, Brazil, Ethiopia, Ghana, Laos, Thailand and Switzerland

Everything is cryopreserved at −80 °C at the University of Zurich. The next stage is expanding into environmental microbiota from threatened ecosystems.

How well are you taking care of your microbiota? 😉
