Chandrayaan 3's hop experiment reveals layered structure beneath moon's surface

1 post in this topic

Chandrayaan 3's hop experiment have revealed a layered structure beneath the moon's surface.  Understanding this layer is crucial for building future scientific bases and human habitats on the moon.

India's Chandrayaan 3 is the first spacecraft from earth to successfully perform a soft landing on the moon's rugged and unexplored south polar region, and the experiments and data collected over there have provided insights with respect to crucial resources (like drinking water, oxygen, and rocket fuel) for future human colonies and deep-space missions.

A team of scientists from the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) on May 18 shared a report of the findings of the ‘Hop’ experiment conducted by the Vikram Lander of Chandrayaan-3 and the Chandra’s Surface Thermophysical Experiment (ChaSTE) on the moon.

The researchers noted, “While we often call it lunar soil, the more apt term to be used is lunar regolith. The lunar regolith is actually shattered rock, tiny, jagged glass-like shards that are abrasive and cling to everything.”
