digitisation

1 post in this topic

The world is getting too digital.

I have always loved digital technology. I've been a gamer since the 1980s - i recall 286 PCs and hte first Pentium processors. I played Doom in the 1990s and early football/soccer management games like Sensible Soccer and Championship Manager. I also played the first Quake and played the first Sims. I owned a mobile phone since 1998 and a smartphone since 2011. I am a marketer by profession, which is heavily digital these days. So I am a digital baby, so to speak. However, I feel we've gone too far.

Cash is good. I don't like paying for shit with a card often.

Online shopping is convenient but I prefer stuff in physical shops. I like going in and literally feeling items. I like open space.

Digital technology has benefits, but I feel we've become too reliant on it.

I sometimes feel that popular media like Terminator and hte Matrix are as much warnings as they are philosophical/entertainment points. In that we need to be careful about how much we rely on technology. Even in non-dystopian media like Star Trek, there is a theme of how we engage with sapient technological beings and how we treat them. The recent Picard series touched on this, as did both TNG and Voyager with Data and The Doctor, respectively.
