I frequently encounter a great deal of confusion when it comes to this Consciousness work. I find myself zigzagging and doubling back on things which I thought I've come to understand & master.

Just when I feel to be bounding on the verge of a breakthrough into a new depth of understanding, I soon find myself falling down into states of deep unconscious reactivity.

It appears to be the egomind unconsciously attempting to regain control on a dissolving sense of self and certainty. The ego's basic job is to freeze frame reality. The ego wants to lock things in place because without the sense of an anchor point, consciousness begins to lose rigidity. As it becomes more fluid, this experience of lesser restricted awareness further threatens the continued survival of the egomind. Things can slip out of the mind's grasp in an exponential manner unless this casting is strictly maintained.

The last thing the ego wants to let happen is to let you catch glimpse of what lies beyond it. Once that does occur to a sufficient degree, the game of the egomind can be seen through as an Illusion, falsehood, and deception. 

The active recognition of this is often only a temporary recognition, as homeostasis will nearly always return consciousness to a state of limitation.

Though upon the rearrival to the ordinary waking state, something has most certainly changed. Not necessarily the colors, none of the shapes have to change, the names and labels can all remain the same. 

There is a deeper layer of recognition that begins to take root. It can be both subtle and sneakily profound. It may take several occurrences of peaking past the veil of ego to truly even get a conscious sense of what this newfound meta understanding is.

As has been mentioned by many others, it is not that by changing states we are getting attached to and obsessively reverent of the expanded states.

We are not neglecting of the "ordinary" state by shifting into the profound psychedelic ones. Inversely, by utilizing the psychedelic tools, we are able to nurture and heal the ordinary state.

This is often seen as subtle shifts in how the ego reacts over time. It can also manifest as a feeling of deeper understanding and trust in consciousness during day to day living.
