The 8 Laws of Change by Stephan A. Schwartz are principles derived from extensive research into successful social transformations over more than a century. They reveal the patterns and behaviors that enable enduring, compassionate, and life-affirming change on personal, societal, and global levels. These laws emphasize shared intention, nonviolence, equality, and integrity among individuals and groups. Here are the 8 Laws of Change according to Stephan Schwartz:

Shared Common Intention
Individuals, both individually and collectively as a group, must share a common intention.

Goals vs. Cherished Outcomes
Individuals and groups may have goals, but they must not be attached to specific cherished outcomes.

Acceptance of Long Timeframes
Members must accept that their goals may not be reached within their lifetimes and be okay with this.

No Expectation of Credit
Individuals must accept that they may not receive credit or acknowledgment for their contributions.

Fundamental Equality
Every person in the group, regardless of gender, religion, race, or culture, must enjoy fundamental equality.

Nonviolence in Word, Act, and Thought
The group must renounce violence completely, including in words, actions, and thoughts.

Consistency Between Private and Public Selves
Individuals must make their private selves consistent with their public postures.

The Quotidian Choice
Change is enacted through daily, mundane decisions where one consciously chooses the more compassionate and life-affirming option as understood at that moment.
