I think his core purpose is to cause a paradigm shift in science. Digital Physics/VR Simulation are the next steps to science. Bit is the new atom.

Humans being humans. I can't judge. When you have extreme levels of power, you have to become really careful to not lose your mind. It can definitely corrupt your soul.
