The US next big thing seems to be this competition with China. So the US isolating itself and bullying its “allies” seems like the dumbest thing to do.

If Trump wants to destroy the US and the relationships with its allies and partners then yea he should invade. But then nobody will come to the USs aid when China and Russia attack or whatever. There will be no incentive for allies and partners to keep things like the petro dollar and buy US products.
