  1. It’s not just about money, we have a capacity limit of advanced weapon systems
  2. Even if Putin took the entire country he’d have to expend massive indefinite resources to occupy it and deal with an insurgency while under harsh sanctions. A reasonable deal would be let Putin keep the four oblasts and give Putin assurances Ukraine will remain neutral. The security guarantee to Ukraine can be that if he violates it the military aid and sanctions continue, this time not stopping. Anything else is essentially just saying Ukraine continues a war of attrition until it is totally destroyed.
  3. Then Putin wouldn’t agree to stop the war if the security guarantee is making Ukraine an existential threat in his eyes
  4. But that’s a ridiculous demand. It’s been known from well before the war started Russia sees Ukraine in NATO as a threat.
  5. He came out against trumps Gaza plan. Probably he dislikes Zelensky not agreeing to the mineral plan. Like a month or two prior he talked about wanting access to Ukraines minerals.
  6. You don’t call someone out in the middle of negotiations where you want them to make concessions
  7. I recommend watching the full press conference. The discussion started polite and Trump said he was agreeing to a sign a long term financing agreement. It got heated because Zelensky kept interjecting and trying to start an argument. When Trump said people died on both sides, Zelensky needlessly interjected saying Russians were invaders, Vance made a good point that constantly demonizing Russia in the media has not helped negotiations, and it started the argument. I’m thinking Zelensky did this on purpose, either because he wants to US to reduce or stop aid so he can agree to end the war but blame them, or to make more of a split between the Us and Europe to get Europe to finance more and hope in the next four years a different admin more in favor of indefinite military spending will come along.
  8. Europe is already having major social issues and radicalization, if they militarize now that would mean worsening it as they have to pull resources from their social safety net.
  9. I don’t support Trump extorting Ukraine for minerals. But seriously, what does Zelensky even want? He has been given hundreds of billions of aid for years now and all that has happened is he’s in a war of attrition where he is losing men and land. Trump already said he would keep sending weapons but he needlessly started an argument with Vance instead of just smiling and nodding. No Ukraine supporter has given a coherent realistic plan that doesn’t involve just pushing the rest of Ukraine into the meat grinder.
  10. I think it’s more they are just looking at exploiting whatever political winds give them the most benefit. They backed the dei stuff when the left had cultural hegemony to avoid their ire being focused on them and make inroads with power in Washington. Now the left started turning on them (Bernie and AOC pressured Amazon to increase minimum wage, congress shamed Zuck at hearings) and the rightwing has made major gains so they’re shifting to appeal there hoping to get on the republicans good side again. I don’t think it’s shame. I think they view their companies as their life work, and will do whatever and side with whomever to keep it growing.

  14. If you support Ukraine’s war you should be happy. It undercuts one of Trumps main arguments for suspending funding.
  15. No one is saying that all humans have equal survival value. Obviously that is not true. But the institutions like the justice system is supposed to move away from the dog eat dog world to create a more cohesive social system, which actually has better survival value.

  17. United States, Russia, Belarus, Hungary, North Korea and Israel vote against UN resolution condemning Russia for invading Ukraine at the United Nations. Iran and China abstained. I’m shocked they’re shifting this fast. I initially thought Europe primarily supported Ukraine due to US pressure, but if they keep the support up after the US abandons them I’ll admit that was a wrong assumption.
  18. He wasn’t aggressive when Ukraine had a leader who wanted to maintain neutrality
  19. Putin is a dictator and there isn’t much revolt in Russia before the war. His position won’t be that weak if the war ends especially considering how much the economy will improve if all the soldiers can go back to the workforce and the sanctions are gone. The problem is Putins dream was for Russia and Ukraine to be like Canada and the US, essentially the same people who freely travel between. If Ukraine remains as a state that’s out the window as they will hate Russia and be paranoid of them for a long time. So he’s going to weigh if it’s worth it to keep going and try and occupy more or all of Ukraine over time to end up closer to his dream since this may be a chance to make major gains as a US admin that is less dedicated to Ukraine is in charge for the next four years.

  21. That’s a justification of class discrimination. Wealthy and powerful already have so many advantages we shouldn’t also accept their lives being considered more important by what should be public institutions that are one of the only equalizing forces in society. Accepting this opens up a host of other issues in how the government works and distributes resources. Plus Luigi can then argue the ceo was actually causing more damage than an average guy by denying insurance claims.
