Insight from playing metroid/dungeon style games

1 post in this topic

It doesn't matter where you start. Yes, there is a straight shot to where you need to go sometimes but for this metaphor I'm talking about the stress that comes with having too many options to choose from. Like say you need to clean your room - you have to vacuum, put new sheets on, pick up trash, etc. but the INSIGHT is that it literally doesn't matter which of these you start with. You optimization freaks can get smart about it and say "but there is an order of operations that will result in a faster overall time". YES - and you should use that situationally, but my claim is a significant burden is lifted off your shoulders when you choose to just "start somewhere". Usually in games you have to clear every room of the dungeon in order to get to the final boss/chest, and I think it actually saves time to not think about it and just dive in. Like a minecraft cave - you have no idea of what's lurking in each tunnel of the cave but you just pick a random one and come back to the others later.
