Finding passion and listening to ones intuition

I can't remember which video it was but Leo Gura made a video about in order to discover ones purpose so to speak, one has to listen to ones intuition. Atleast he mentioned that. Well that's what i'm trying to do now, I can't picture myself a life of routine and a boring 9-5 lifestyle forever. 

I spend a lot of time in front of my computer and I'm currently studying to become a programmer, but I paradoxically loathe the idea of working for some bland corporation that produces something I couldn't care less about. Funnily enough I tend to get innovative ideas for projects I could do on my own, and i'm thinking of going more towards that direction than the other. 

 

the dilemma is this

either you work for someone and earn a decent salary which enables you to live in a stable fashion

or you take a risk and do something crazy that may or may not succeed. 

And i find taking the risk a little bit more entertaining than the former alternative. Am fully aware that my unrealistic ideas may backfire economically, but spiritually it seems to be a win-win situation, i'll be energized doing something that i enjoy, plus I might also make whatever programming project i have in mind part of a portfolio for seeking a job, when that becomes relevant.

How would you approach a similar dilemma? I personally don't see anything wrong with the 9-5, like i understand why people would choose that so i am sympathetic to that, after all we wouldn't have a functioning civilization without that sort of business. But you gotta admit it's kind of boring, atleast in theory. some people may enjoy it though so..ye.
