How Facebook Propagated Genocide in Myanmar

Hate, controversy, and conspiracy are emotional triggers that catch eyeballs and sell. This is an egregious and extreme example of how through their own policy, Facebook fueled local divisions and became a key ingredient in causing ethic cleansing.

 

 

 

The lack of responsibility from was impressive. Creating policy that shifted a low tech nation from basically 0% phone users to 40%, all where a deal was struck so that Facebook comes pre-downloaded on every phone in the country. And further massive incentives are given for the use of their platform.

 

To only have one moderator who speaks the language of the nation. To ignore warnings that things were getting out of control, that their platform was not only a vessel for but actively promoting hate and conspiracy against a national minority group. Yet, they still did nothing but brush the problem under the rug until it was too late.
