If they were both in front of me, guns to their heads I would save the child, but I wouldn’t judge someone for choosing differently because I feel like the implications of taking a hard stance on this would be very hard to align with. Whenever I hear this question I imagine someone approaching me with “Would you give up your bike to save a child from being murdered in another country?” Sure. A child’s life is more important than my bike. Then “Would you give up your nice car and be forced to drive a beat up one to save an additional child?” Okay, yeah. This can keep going with things that are not strictly necessary to survival until you are reduced to only what you need to survive and be maybe reasonably happy. At some point most people would draw the line. I think for most that would be at some possession that is probably much less valuable than the life of a pet. Would I trade every single luxury in my life to save 20 impoverished children who I didn’t even know existed and will never see? Probably not. So I don’t see it as strictly wrong for someone to choose a pet’s life over a child when I would choose some degree of material luxury over that child. Now if the child was right in front of me, crying and begging, I almost definitely would give up most of my things to save them so it’s also not that simple.

@Adrian colby Yes! To call Transgenderism “valueless” just shows that someone has not put themselves into the position of the people they are criticizing and truly understood their lived experience.

There is zero integrity in this argument. The framing is so wildly dishonest. 1% of people is inaccurate it’s more like 10% and that doesn’t even address the fact that the actual numbers are obviously higher due to stigma. Nearly 25% of Gen Z (who new media is largely geared towards) identify as LQBTQ. Not to mention the fact that you don’t give a justification for why there should be a 1:1 ratio of representation in media vs population. Societal context and social factors should obviously play into what shows up in media depicting society. Especially when there has been such growth in the number of people coming to terms with their sexuality. The progression of acceptance for LGBTQ people is a hallmark of the 21st century so far and there is much more to be done so of course it’s prominent in media.

@Basman Maybe for now. Everything I have seen shows prices of lab meat becoming comparable in the next decade. Ignore all the subsidies given to the meat industry and the actual production costs are probably pretty close right now. With the climate issue getting worse and worse something has to be done soon. I wouldn’t see it as unreasonable to imagine that some of those subsidies could eventually be transferred to lab meat production. Also, with a cow you are limited to what ever minimum costs are necessary to feed that cow and care for it, which we are probably already at. I think in a lab there is much more room for minimizing costs and optimizing the process.

@Something Funny I agree that the vast majority of people already value animal life over plant life instinctively. I always use the example that if faced with saving an animal or houseplant from a burning building, there would be no question for most people (unless it was an insect or something like that). Those types of situations are easy though because they don’t involve having to give up anything. People will readily agree that suffering is bad and should be minimized. When the prospects of pleasure, comfort and convenience come in, all of a sudden animal suffering and abuse is more ‘complicated’. That’s when you start to see all sorts of excuses and mental gymnastics like plants could feel pain or crop deaths. So yes people recognize animal suffering as bad when they do not benefit from it but pleasure and self-interest are often much more powerful drivers of choice. It’s hard to overstate how much pleasure some people get from a cheeseburger lol
