The filmmaker Neil Breen is an astounding example of a man with zero self-awareness. He’s been making awful, cringe films for two decades with no self-awareness of how bad his film-making is. He literally makes the worst films of all time — but with total passion and delusional self-confidence. It’s amazing. His fans watch his work for how bad it is, but he is so self-absorbed and narcissistic he doesn’t understand that. He thinks they love his work. But ironically all his films are profitable because they are so bad and he is so delusional that people can’t stop watching!

I’m sharing this as an example of how you should not be. This demonstrates why self-awareness is so important.

This isn’t a joke topic. Watching Neil Breen makes me much more conscious of my own lack of self-awareness and cringe ways. It’s quite salubrious.

Here’s the million dollar question for you to contemplate: “How am I like Neil Breen?”
(And I don’t mean me, I mean you.)

If you’ve never seen a Neil Breen film, be warned, you will melt from the cringe. But you should force yourself to watch just to reflect on how ugly lack of self-reflection is. The key insight here is: You have more in common with Neil Breen than you’d like to admit. Rather than laughing at him, you should wonder, “What if I’m as un-self-aware as him?” That is a serious study of self-deception.
