Art With A Capital A
By Leo Gura - March 4, 2026
He is right that Art with a capital A is about enriching the viewer, dare I say, enriching the viewer spiritually. However, the problem I have with this is that Art just isn’t a good medium for that. You can consume all the Art in the world and it will not enrich you spiritually as much as just contemplation and psychedelics. Just as video games are a terrible medium to deep story-telling, Art is a terrible medium for spiritual enrichment. The spiritual enrichment that art like film and video games offers is as thin as a potato chip.
Not to be a jerk, but for all of his fancy talk, you can play all of Jonathan Blow’s games, which took him a life time to create, and you will get less enrichment than just contemplating one of my videos. Human literature is just not deep, never mind video games.
So for me, video games ARE about escapism. Video games are about exploring imagination and dream worlds. The Art is in the beauty of creating an alternative reality. What he didn’t mention at all is that Art is creating beauty. Just Beauty for its own sake is enough of a reason to do Art. Art doesn’t need to have a message or a lesson because neither does Beauty.
But kudos to Jonathan Blow for having artistic integrity and at least trying to do more with games than just mindless fun. I admire how hard he works on his Art and his thoughtfulness about it.
