The argument to not ban Tik Tok is weak in this case. She has not raised enough sufficient evidence to make a compelling and persuasive case for her side.  It's stupid and silly to defend this Tik Tok app at this point.

@Hardkill  What do you think? Should Tik Tok be banned or not in America? Regulated more or less, if not banned?

I think that it should be regulated much more than it is.

However, I am not sure now if it should be permanently banned because there are probably millions of Americans who used it to promote their own businesses and numerous young political activists who have been using it to help get out the vote for Democratic, liberal, and progressive candidates throughout the country. Cenk and AOC mentioned in that vid that young liberal and progressive TikTok users arguably helped Biden defeat Trump in the electoral college. Even though Biden won the national popular vote against Trump by about 7 million votes, he was about a total of 43,000 votes in 3 swing states combined from losing the electoral college. Therefore, Trump was arguably close to being re-elected President.

Also, there’s the legal argument that banning a social media platform such as TikTok could be unconstitutional as it might violated the 1st amendment rights of freedom of speech.

Okay, here's what I think: I think Tik Tok should be banned for the following:

1. A historic moment in America's history in recent decades, of a social media platform being banned. Also, the USA government does shut down websites as well, like illegal drug trafficking, sex trafficking sites and other perverse and potentially harmful websites from time to time, of course these websites aren't social media sites. Why not make history and BAN TIK TOK and be the first country to do so?

2. While this AOC politician argues from the legal standpoint, I argue from the psychological harm standpoint. In fact, in the very design and formatting of Tik Tok, from automated facial beautification, to time distortion(no time marks in Tik Tok screen=lose of time spent), and to Algorithm hyper efficient in tailoring and catering content per user's bias more so than any other algorithm out there, and the controversy of kiddie porn being recommended in Tik Tok feeds, there's a convincing case for banning Tik Tok due to psychological degradation of the user, as well as enough studies and research so far to show the ADD/ADHD symptoms that develop from prolonged social media usage of Tik Tok. Can we tolerate Tik Tok and the corrosive effects it has for the brains of young people?

3. National security risks. AOC is incorrect to saying that the USA's data laws, privacy laws and protection laws are being violated by big tech and USA based tech companies that collect your data, and drawing a false equivalency to the data collection, privacy and protection laws in China and the CCP, which is none existent or minimal in comparison to USA based companies, as these USA based companies collect information to improve their services and products offered digitally to customers and users, whilst the CCP collects data from users of Tik Tok to actually spy more on every user and to use data nefariously for whatever aims the CCP has in store.

4. Creates an opportunity to actually question the Amendments and constitutional rights in the USA, and to finally open reviews to modify these amendments to better suit the modern world. Does banning Tik Tok violate the 1st amendment? Let's revise the 1st amendment then. Why? Because some people abuse and misuse the 1st amendment to kingdom come! Finally, a truly pivotal moment in history, to question and revise these amendments right Americans?! Finally some forward progress.

5. Also, Just because Tik Tok has marginally helped with voting for the left against Trump, as AOC and TYT claim, doesn't mean that it justifies not banning Tik Tok, as this is favoritism and bias. Why? Because if it happened to be that Tik Tok had way more right-wingers, that is voting for Trump and the Republic that happened to be in the right morally speaking, that just happens to be fighting against evil corrupt lizard lefties ruling the establishment, wouldn't AOC and TYT then for banning Tik Tok?. See how the syllogism and logic of this makes it more selfish that a person would just oppose Tik Tok just because it helped you?

I don't think a TikTok ban is unreasonable.

@Danioover9000 @Leo Gura

You both make valid points.

Also, if the US did ban TikTok, someone else in the US will probably come up with a US version of that app.

I guess we’ll have to see how this plays out in Congress and possibly in the courts.

TikTok has helped me grow as a artist and other people I know. If you’re making a living out of TikTok ofc this would be disastrous. So no, it shouldn’t be banned.

Yes, I think most users here already know you're sort of making a living with your Tik Tok. Tough, but this thing's getting more and more unethical by the months. Get ready, prepare to find another outlet for your artistic talents. Tik Tok either will be banned from the USA, or will be regulated severely.

Don't be like Destiny or these toxic influencers and streamers. Did you know that he was doxxed by a kid about a decade ago, and later threatened to kill that kid and his Dad? Over being blocked, without considering other alternative avenues of gaining income? Do you want to grow like that, treat life over dramatically like that?

Should they ban Tiktok and keep the rest? Instagram, YouTube, Snapchat & Twitter just copied TikTok.

An argument could be made, that Tiktok is a strangely special case, since it’s 1. Chinese owned and 2. It’s ridiculously big despite the fact the short form content like it has been tried before and hasn’t gotten as big as TikTok’s version.

Its odd seeing adults obsess over something besides Facebook, the cost of attention is as great as the cost of time wasted.

Because I still have lots of stage orange in me, my gut reaction is to oppose the ban. But for the good of world, I would support it.

TikTok is an incredible business tool I must admit, I’m social media sober so I never picked it up. And I wouldn’t wish it on anyone. Coming from a place of Self-love.

@MarkKol If any of the social media companies do something egregious, then the government can hold them accountable but if tiktok does something egregious, there isn't anything the American government can do to them other than ban them.

TikTok has the power to threaten democracy, it can incite violence, misinformation etc.. Will they do that? No one knows but it's within their power or a heavily followed personality to do that.
Banning TikTok would be a preventative measure.

TikTok is a gossip machine. It affirms your beliefs more than it opens your mind. You can find original and educational content on TikTok but there are so few of them.

In my opinion, banning will actually make the world more better place. It makes people who are generally anti-internet more close-minded to exploring it.

People mistakenly think that TikTok makes people more connected and open-minded. It makes all sorts of dogmatic people more dogmatic then ever.

The internet has lot to offer than people realize.

TikTok would be fine if it adhered to the typical Western/US based app algorithms (money based, ad based, clicks, etc like Facebook, Twitter, IG, etc ) but it doesn't.  It's a different beast of an algorithm all on it's own.  It's like if you injected an algorithm with meth and let it run unmoderated--which is basically in layman terms what TikTok is.  It's social media cranked up to 11.  This is also done very insidiously along with triggering your dopamine with bite sized video content, scrolling, likes, notifications, etc.  All completely designed to keep you on there.  The latter isn't news to anybody since most people know what social media does to the brain (thanks to documentaries like Social Dilemma for example).  The thing is, THIS social media app (TikTok) is extremely toxic.

It's super obvious that this is the crux of the "problem" and why the US wants this app for themselves or to just nuke it off the US app store all together.  TikTok BRAINWASHES.  That's all it's about.  Sure data being sent to China is a concern but that's easy to prove or monitor, this is what the courts were all about but that's surface level stuff.  The US doesn't like TikTok's algorithm and what it's doing to people in this country.  Adults, teens, young adults are all moving and acting different because of TikTok content.  China knows this and does not use the same algorithm that is being used on Western countries on their own citizens through TikTok--they have their own 'tailored' algorithm there that's nothing like the Western version.  Apps like IG, Youtube, Twitter, etc make it quite difficult to become famous or gather a large following in a short amount of time.  It is by design.

This is not about Facebook, IG, Twitter, etc not being able to compete with TikTok, so this is all done to be the winner LOL, no..  It's the algorithm.

With TikTok, things go viral in hours and you could amass a massive following in days or weeks.  A symptom of this, is  EXACTLY how Andrew Tate came to be on the internet.  He was always out there but he basically hijacked and rode the TikTok algorithm into gaining a massive following, a lot of money and notoriety.

My question is:  Say TikTok/Bytedance says OK, the US can buy our app/algorithm from us for a lot of money.. would that mean the US will implement this style of algorithm to US Western apps like Twitter, IG, Facebook, etc?  Imagine how horrifying a TikTok based algorithm being injected into Twitter would be lmao.

You're right, it's pretty horrifying how Tik Tok has damaged and proliferated many false and distorted ideologies out there, far quicker than any other app, it certainly has greater brainwashing capacities. Also, Tik Tok did help a little bit with the voting against the Republicans and Trump, but because it could do so any political party can amass and utilize Tik Tok to gain quick following and ramp up votes for any agenda they want.

Unideal situation for me is this thing is still in the market, even with much more restrictions. Ideally this has to go away, the negatives are building up.

TikTok is extremely harmful, whilst appearing extremely harmless. I think it should have been banned already.
