I agree. Yes even though Im all for my health, alcohol is my guilty pleasure. I dont drink often but like the confidence and temporary good feeling it gives you.

Taking alcohol is like taking psychedelics for me. They don't call it spirit for nothing.

From health perspective, it's one of the most stupid things you can do.

From social perspective, it has value. Although, that value (and more) can be generated through improving and developing yourself (without alcohol).

My lowest point was probably when I dressed up as Heisenberg at a Halloween party and drank so much vodka that I couldn't stand upright. I fell over the railing halfway down a set of stairs and luckily only bruised my back. The cops were called because of noise complaints (there were like 50 people in a 4-story apartment). My friends ordered a taxi for me while I was laying on the ground, threw me inside and basically teleported me to my house. I kept saying the wrong address, and I had to pay the equivalent of 300$ the day after for puking in the taxi. I wasn't able to enter the pin to pay the taxi driver, and I emptied all the contents of my wallet all across the neighborhood. I wasn't able to enter the code for the front door, so I banged on the door and screamed like some cave troll until one of my roommates opened up. My brain was completely wrecked for the whole week after that. Literally the day after, we were dissecting pig intestines in some laboratory class in university. It was truly disgusting and I was definitely the useless member of the group. I probably lost a few brain cells that night.

I think that alcohol consumption should be restricted because it's dangerous. I don't like the normalization of alcohol and treating it as if it's only an innocent social drink to warm people up.

People die in accidents because of alcohol, children born disabled because of alcohol, people abuse their families because of alcohol, people get sick and permanently lose their health because of alcohol, people lose their self-respect and humanity because of alcohol, people bypass therapy by consuming alcohol, people die.

I don't like being drunk, seeing or being around drunk people, I'm pretty traumatized by that. The smells, the stupid behaviour, it's really annoying for me personally.

But, I don't mind, for a special occasion, once in a while, to drink high quality beer or whine, in moderation.

My interest in alcohol completely faded when I was in a meditative state and drank some alcohol, it's the complete opposite of spiritual depth to me. I just felt like I lost connection, felt dumb and it was gross on many levels. I have not been drunk in over a year now.

Even if you want to use it as a social lubricant it is still dumb, it is way too powerful and a poison. You are more likely to look like an idiot than "social".

If you really need something like that finding a natural supplement or nootropic is better.

I grew up and live in the southern part of Austria, which is a country with a huge beer-drinking culture.
Almost everyone I know starts drinking at or even before the age of 16 (which is the legal age for beer & wine) and the amount usually increases in your early 20's. When I started university, going out 2-3 times a week partying was just a normal social convention. I played tennis competititvely for years and even there the "after game beer" is the normal thing to do.

Funnily enough, most young people are pretty healthy regardless. We generally move a lot and eat decently, which helps.

As a gastroenterologist, I can see both sides of the picture pretty clearly. I have propably seen hundreds, if not thousands of lives destroyed because of this substance. The liver is usually an extremely tenacious organ, but if you manage to irreverseibly damage it - then you will suffer through unimaginable hells.

I have struggled with this dichotomy but found the middle way to be the best for me personally.

Like any other drug - set and setting should be the basis for consumption. Do you drink because you want to suppress your emotions? Deal with fears? Overcome social anxiety? succumb to societal pressure?

Or is it because a cold beer is delicious, your life is great and getting wasted with your family/friends on a certain occasion can be an incredibly fun thing to do.

@ShardMare In moderation its fine and can have benefits. I have had some interesting insights after a couple glasses of wine. It's good at helping release fear and inhibitions. It can be a helpful tool. If you drink too much though, you get some negative affects.

I think the key is to restrict using alcohol as a crutch as much as possible. Its a massive cope for a lot of folks in my opinion.

That said, I don't see too much harm in every once in a while getting drunk for fun, with mates.

Hey, it's your call if you want to booze or not. Just weigh the pros and cons and decide if it's worth it. If you're going for it, start with a small sip and take it easy. Stick to beer or wine with low alcohol content to begin with. Oh, and don't forget to chug water and munch on food while drinking to avoid feeling like crap later.

@LSD-Rumi whats gbl/gbh?

I think he means GHB and its related compounds. It works similarly to alcohol, but it's a dodgy substance when it comes to dosing and such.

How bad is alcohol? Im on school trip and it left me to be more curious how does a person should react to alcohol. How many bad effects are there, is it worth it in the end, should i drink with my friend? How does it affect mental health? How should i try out alcohol, what should i drink first to get a taste? What are your experiences with alcohol?

From what I know, it increases likelihood for certain cancers, fatty liver, and doesn't help with odor.

My opinion, not expert, personally, the drug of choice for any bad day, good in combating my dark episodes of depression and Nihilism, also hot sex, I mean really hot sex can be had also. JUST DRINK RESPONSIBLY!

I only drink it when clubbing because it gives me so much value in terms of confidence, having fun and letting go. The poison is worth it.

It’s very bad for you, but it’s also fun as fuck. That’s why people do it, no point denying that it makes socialising 10000 times better.

I used to think it was really dumb, because I would drink a lot and it would taste bad and I wouldn't feel much different. Plus, it's a diuretic, so all it would really do for me is make me piss a lot for no reason. It turns out I just have a high tolerance, so I needed to go for harder alcohols (20% alcohol or more) like vodka and whiskey. I like having them combined with some kind of soda or something sweet. But, I've also noticed that my tolerance for exogeneous stimulants in general is very high, even caffeine doesn't have much of an effect on me, so you shouldn't expect to have the same tolerance as me. I would start off with a 5% alcohol drink like a White Claw or something and see how it affects you.

If you're normally very introverted, you'll probably find its effect on your state very interesting. I think it's worth experiencing. It will make you more social and easy-going, there will be less filters on what you think and speak. It's a nice feeling.

I still don't like wine or beer, they taste awful and don't do much for me.

I know that people get addicted to alcohol, but I don't find it to be addictive at all. Maybe because I'm already very health-conscious. I only ever drink it if I'm going to some social event and they happen to have it there, otherwise I've never purposefully gone out and bought it for myself.

If you got sealed and aged red wine or any wine, whiskey, rum, or liquor, send them to me please! Just because you don't like them, doesn't mean you get to keep them locked in your basement.

I don't, but I do have some hand sanitizer that I can send over. Tastes about the same.

I do actually like whiskey, rum, vodka, etc. I actually enjoyed my first time taking a tequila shot. Wine and beer just taste bad to me, though.

drinking with my boys gave me some of my best peak experiences. laughing, having fun, going crazy

alcohol also has a unique experience to make you more emotionally open

you can also get some good insights in a in a tipsy- drunk state

i think if you're using alcohol for fun, connection or sometimes even insight, it can be useful !

Ofc! use your wisdom when approaching all drugs imo. try to only do it in social settings, or as a means of getting insight. be careful of self-deception
