Leo, how to heal Hashimoto's Disease?

So I got the diagnosis for Hashimoto last year and today I went to the doctor and he said that in the future the disease will get worse and worse. Im taking medication for it right now. Most internet sites tell me that it is not possible to heal it. Are there any people here on this forum, who themselves are struggling with Hashimotos disease and who reversed it or made it somehow better? How did you do it and what other ways are out there to heal your thyroid? Also I think that Leo is struggling with this disease, so what is your advice, Leo?

Autoimmunity can be tricky and full remission hard to achieve but anecdotally a lot of people have been able to feel much better and even reduce the biomarkers of inflammation and discomfort for themselves. 

While there is unlikely to be one driver, with any autoimmunity you basically want to address everything: 

  • your diet
  • your anthropometrics - mainly your BMI and body fat content
  • your sleep, relaxation and recovery 
  • physical activity 
  • environmental exposure - toxins, pollution, microplastics, living in are with high usage of pesticides/herbidices
  • any unresolved traumas or negative beliefs learned in childhood 
  • gut health & microbiome disruption can often be a contributor in autoimmunity 
  • toxic relationships, unfulfilled passions, lack of purpose etc 

Hard to tell what your driver is without more thorough assessment but I'd probably start with: polishing your diet, (if necessary) getting into a healthy bodyweight and getting on top of your stress levels. 

From there, other alleys can be taken, depending on what is the most pressing concern.

It's tricky. Conventional doctors don't know how to cure it.

It might just be genetic and have no cure in some cases. However it can also be possible to cure with serious diet changes and removing all toxins which cause your autoimmunity.

Fundamentally, autoimmuninity is the body's reaction to some kind of toxins in your food, water, or environment. Whether you are to identify that toxin and remove it is gonna vary.

Begin with fixing your diet because that is the most common source of toxins.

The advice is, dig deep into research so you understand the complexity of the issue, and then slowly start testing things one at a time and monitor how you feel and measure the thyroid antibodies in your blood. If you can minimize those antibodies then you know you've made progress. You may or may not be able to achieve that.

Search for people who have been able to reduce their antibodies to zero and study what steps they took. Then test those out on yourself one by one. Don't try too many things at once or you will get confused.

@tezk I'm not a huge fan of Paleo diet in general because they are master cherry pickers and demonize large group categories like legumes and wholegrains and spew out all sorts of weird nonsense like plant toxins and LDL denialism. 

But anecdotally they seem to help some people minimize symptoms which is great.My only concern is that it might be short sighted.

In my opinion any diet that "fixes" the issue by avoiding high fibre produce is just hiding the real problem that is probably residing in the gut.

First of all, let me share an important fact: Hashimoto is one of the most common autoimmune diseases and therefore also one of the most well studied. Now lets just assume the worst case scenario for a second: You won't heal and it gets progressively worse.  Even in that case, you can substitute thyroid hormones for the rest of your life and just be fine. In fact, funnily enough - Hashimoto has been correlated to increased longevity in some epidemiological research. I have personally treated patients who have been living with their Hashimoto for 30+ years and they are fine as long as they take their medication. So please, do not stress yourself out because of this. Even the worst case scenario isn't really that bad. 

That said, I am personally convinced that our current medical paradigm is way too reductive when it comes to our approach to autoimmune diseases - and I say this as a MD myself. We are amazing at the treatment of acute causes but almost in the dark ages when it comes to more complex pathologies. What Michael wrote in his response is to the right way to think about it:

There are countless stories of patients who healed themselves from such conditions, so its definitely possible but also highly individual. Therefore, if you are really serious about it, you should look for a holistically minded medical doctor or experienced health professional to work with you. It takes time and money, but it might be worth it. J

Just a word of caution: It's really difficult to find someone decent and the whole scene is littered with snake oil-salesman and major bullshitters. Most stuff you read on the internet is bullshit, be curious but dont take anything face value. I personally can not take new patients at the moment because I am overworked as hell.

Definitely case by case basis. Personally, I would never be comfortable making major suggestions to someone for whom I have not done 3-hour case taking on their entire health, lifestyle & diet. Basically, find someone who either specialises in autoimmunity or even the particular one you're looking at or get in touch with someone who seems to know what they are talking about. 

Anecdotally, I've seen a modified Mediterranean diet work very well for a guy with MS and a lady with chronic  psoriasis alongside stress reduction techniques. But someone else might not respond to it at all, in fact some people actually get worse on a high-fibre diet and you need to support their gut before even attempting to do anything else. 

Also, you want to avoid anyone who makes grandiose claims, makes guarantees, offers money back, already telling you what the approach will be (e.g. making claims such as "heal all disease with keto/paleo/vegan") and all sorts of shady bullshit.

A proper evidence-based health practitioner will actually, in advance, tell you that odds of healing might not be as high and you might simply be looking for a lifelong management of the condition (although it can still happen). This is, in fact, the case for many people with autoimmunity, allergic diseases, cancer etc even those treated by their masters in the field of various health modalities. 

 Health can be complicated, and full healing is not always possible.

I reduced them somewhat but not entirely.

It affects me with chronic fatigue, serious gut problems, extreme sensitivity to cold, worse cognitive function, sleepiness, lowered immune system, and worse overall mood.

Coriander seed as a daily supplement may cure thyroid disorders. Worth trying. It works for some people and it is a traditional remedy in India.
