What should I do with my degree in mathematics?

5 posts in this topic

I'm graduating this year with a mathematics degree from a global top 10 university. I don't really know where to go with it.

My gameplan right now is to find some job that would give me some decent income while not totally draining me, so that I can work on my life purpose alongside my day job. So this means I'm not becoming a fucking investment banker.

So most of my options (that is, if I want to make use of my math degree) are basically software engineering, data science and AI/ML. I'm not particularly passionate about any of these fields, but I could probably be decent at them given some training. And since data science and machine learning are arguably a subset of software engineering (i.e I would most likely find it easier to transition from engineering to machine learning rather than vice versa), the only option remaining is software engineering.

Basically I'm wondering if I should just do software engineering, something I've never been super duper excited about, until I get my life purpose sorted? And by the way I do have the course and I'm going through it.

If it’s just a side job for now you could work at a university as a math assistent of some sort or do private math tutoring.

If you have a Math degree from a top 10 global uni. the world is your oyster haha.

Although most corporate paths take a good few years & ass kissing to make serious $$

If you really don’t know what your LP is, you may want to consider a more traditional, well-paying job for now. Even if it’s full time. 40 hours a week will still leave you with some free time.

Your LP is going to require money to start, possibility way more than you’re anticipating. You might be able to get a 70-80k year job out of college and start saving for that now. And then with whatever free time you have on the weekends, begin experimenting with your LP.

Start contemplating now as well what your LP will be. I would not wait until you graduate. Perhaps take Leo’s LP course to get you thinking.
