How Important Is Kundalini?

6 posts in this topic

I’ve heard that it arises naturally with spiritual practice (my experience) but I have a friend who is obsessed with the yoga and the Kriyas and says he’s getting a lot of benefit from it.

The only thing is it’s kind of turned him into a douche bag because he still has his ego fully intact and this “kundalini power” so he’s developed a big spiritual ego in which he believes he’s above everybody. We’re actually not freinds anymore because it was so annoying, especially when he tried pulling that shit on me

I read from a very high conscious teacher that when an ego manipulates its kundalini in unnatural ways it can be detrimental spiritually and cause delusion.

TLDR: I don’t think kundalini yoga is necessary and is actually a distraction from real spiritual work. Would love to hear your guys take

I don't think there are hard-and-fast rules about it, it might be a viable path for one person but not for another - I've tried it but didn't feel it was right for me personally, but I can see how it could be effective for others. I do think it's a specialised practice, though, and it's going to be too intense for a lot of people; I think a gentler, more gradual process is going to be much more effective and harmonious in the long-run for the majority of people, but people in our culture often lack the patience and try to force things, and then end up paying for it further down the line (that's how it was for me, too, to an extent, I had to learn the hard way to be patient and not push myself too hard).

Kundalini Yoga, as taught by yogi Bhajan (3HO, KYYB, etc...) is largely bullshit. It has some elements of real yoga and tantra but it was largely made up by a conman. That isn't going to lead you anywhere.

Kundalini Awakening is a different thing and it can happen as a result of deliberate practice, or spontaneously too, but it is still quite rare, I very much doubt your friend had a real KA given his attitude.

Mm, that was my feeling, too - my sense of it is that it tends to be a very humbling process and can pretty much bring you to your knees, or at least that's how it's been in my experience.
