is 20 minutes of kriya yoga a day enough?

Is 20 minutes enough to noticeably change your consciousness so that you're calmer and more focused?

No, that's not how Kriya yoga is done. Do it properly or don't do it.

Kriya yoga is a serious, rigorous practice, not something you lazily toy with.

Okay, I'll make time to do the full-length process.

@Holygrail If you are serious you should be doing it twice a day.

Again, if you're going to do something, do it seriously or just don't do it. This half-assing of things produces horrible results.

Decide what you want. Be clear. And then do it full-bore.

How much time would you describe as not half-assing?

I agree with Leo's position. However, answering your question, what I found is that pretty much any breath-related yogic technique done properly can give you a state-change as fast as within 5-10 minutes. And it's generally a much more calmer/focused/higher state of consciousness state, indeed. It's just the power of physiology-based techniques. You probably want to do more than that, though

The bare minimum for my routine was about 60 mins. And then twice a day.

It's a serious commitment.

Hypothetically speaking, would it be overkill and unnecessary if one did 3 hours a day?

Don't overdo Kriya. That can be dangerous and counter-productive. 2hrs is plenty.

3hrs per day would be for someone who's already done it for years and is very advanced.

I used to do 12min kriya once a day and not even every day. And benefits were amazing.

Today i meditate only 1min per day. And benefits are even more amazing.

This has all been discussed to death in the Kriya Yoga Mega-Thread.

@BeHereNow Read my thread, I have done Kriya Yoga retreat at home.

3 hours is not overkilling it if you are semi-advanced and you can get to semi-advanced in 1-3 months if you are serious. Lahiri (the OG kriya yogi) had recommended very big numbers of repetitions for his advanced students. You can basically just do one technique - Maha Mudra - all day. Set a realistic goal like 2 hours a day and then if you have time and a desire to push further, then push further.

Just don't do the very advanced techniques all day, but basic Kriya Pranayama and Maha Mudra have virtually no limits.

The limit is people will have major emotional upheaval and ego backlashes. Be careful.

Don't overtrain at the gym.

Yeah, but you can do a retreat where you do Maha Mudra all day for a day or three and you should be okay.
