How self-help helped your depression?

10 posts in this topic

What are the most important points, things you want to tell to a depressed person?

Whats your understanding of depression, what causes it?

Ive been taking sertraline (zoloft) antidepressants for 2 months now, it havent done nothing maybe it made me worse. I dont know what causes my depression, i cant answer the question why do i have it...

My family doesnt have problem with depression. I asked from them why should i live, whats the cause of depression? My brother (19) said its all in your head and you just only have to build goals. I asked from my mum whats meaning of life and she said its to create a meaning. She lives because she has 2 sons. She lives a very boring life, just stays at home washing dishes, she smokes a lot. She looks like a depressed person outside who is trying to cope somehow. Is depression really in your head, you just change how you view things and thats it? Why do i deceive myself so much?

Why unconsciousness brings happiness? I mean looking at my peers: they all do unhealthy things, dont do any meaningful things still they happy or fine lets say.

This spirituality and philosophy, questioning brings emptiness into you and if you are not careful you can easily fall into many traps. This is not easy work but at the end what else there is to do?

I'm copying an answer I just gave in a thread made by @Medhansh

Depression is a sort of accumulated emotional fog clouding your perception. It stems from prolonged self-repression.

In a nutshell, it happens when you're disconnected from your subjective truth for too long. The ignored emotions turn into an unpleasant, indistinguishable soup gravitating at a low energy level, reflecting a sense of powerlessness, despair, fear and shame.

So, learning emotional literacy is what you are looking for. It's about making them distinguishable again and accepting the truth they tell you. You've got to listen to how you feel, and understand what these emotions tells you about your life. Depression is pretty much your body/mind asking you to go back to wholeness.

I'd suggest you'd buy yourself a book about emotions. One of those acting as some sort of Rosetta Stone. For instance, I'm currently using Atlas of the Heart by Brené Brown for this purpose.  I would recommend it. And then, you follow the trail.

On top of that I would recommend doing shadow work, understanding the concept of the pain body by Eckhart Tolle, and looking into Leo's videos about truth and self-deception. These are elements that would speed up your healing.

I encourage you to explore a lot of different things. Try becoming friends with your depression and thank it for trying to teach you something. It can be a door to awakening.

Healing trauma can be really helpful. Talk to a therapist.

Honestly, often it might be because your family is very unhealthy in some way. I already picked up some red flags about your mum.

My recommendations would depend on things like how functional you are with your condition, what you find socialising like, what your educational prospects are like, the degree of your access to financial resources is, and your ability to read.

No matter your circumstance, I reckon it would be useful to start buying into the idea that another life is possible:

I think this a useful start:

I like to ask myself, 'What if?'. Perhaps, you might find value in doing the same.

@Max8 yes good idea. But what would i do if i dont use internet?

@Flowerfaeiry thats to deep for me, i cant do it alone. Im going to a psychologist next week. I dont know how i can make it better. What questions should i be asking.

@Ulax one thing i never understood is why cant i remember things that are important. Remembering everyday "another life is possible" would be important and would be helpful but when i go about my day i just forget these things and im like who cares. I dont get affected by these motivational vids

@ShardMare

I see Depression and Anxiety as two ends of a spectrum, where Depression is what happens when we are lost in thoughts of the past.. what we could have done differently, what could have happened differently, etc.. and Anxiety is what happens when we are lost in thoughts of the future.. what will happen next? What will I do next?

So to move away from either is to bring your awareness to the present moment.  Mindfulness Meditation is a way to practice this.
