Vastu Shastra (vāstu śāstra) is the Vedic science of architecture and design of temples, homes and buildings. ... Often referred to as 'Indian feng shui', Vastu Shastra actually pre-dates Chinese feng shui by about 1500 years.

Vastu shastra are texts on the traditional Indian system of architecture. These texts describe principles of design, layout, measurements, ground preparation, space arrangement, and spatial geometry.

I want to learn more about Vastu Shastra.

I want to be an expert at it.

Currently I know zero about it.

But I can read and learn about it.

It's fascinating to say the least.

I downloaded an app that is a digital Compass and it shows direction.

Vastu Shatra for a new home

The external environment and surroundings of the house could have a significant impact on the owner’s providence. Therefore it’s important to lay the foundation strong by choosing the right location with an open space in a lusciously green locality as it will nurture peace, good health, good luck, and positivity in your life as you step into your new home.

Bungalows or villas directly connect to the earth’s surface hence the land needs to be chosen prudently. Independent landowners have a major scope of creating ‘Vastu’ compliant homes than apartment owners. Independent owners who aspire to construct a bungalow or villa have the luxury to exclusively choose the location and design of their house as per Vastu Shastra. They can do detailed planning and designing of the living room, dining room, bedroom, guest room, kid’s room, kitchen, staircase, and washrooms as per Vastu Shastra.

The first and the foremost thing is the structure design; according to Vastu Shastra the shape of your house should never have an irregular design as erratic shape attracts negativity; therefore always choose asymmetrical design when you are constructing a new house as it will attract prosperity, peace, and good health.

In Vastu Shastra, a spiral staircase signifies a corkscrew that attracts negative energy therefore staircase should always be made straight to attract positivity.

As per the Vastu Shastra, the dining table should be square in shape and not round as it can create a gap between family members and adversely affect family relationships; also you should place a mirror in front of the dining table as it signifies opulence and abundance in food.

Vastu does not recommend study tables and temples to be placed under the beam of your house; also temple should never be connected to the washroom wall as toilets generate negative energies therefore even the lid of the toilet seat should always be covered.

To achieve significant growth in your career keep an idol of ‘Lord Kubera’ in the north direction of your house.
If possible avoid carrying old stuff from your old house to your new house, also preferably use new materials to build your new home as old stuff may transform the same negative energy of your old home to your new home.

Dispose of non-functional things from your homes like broken furniture, tools, electronics, or clocks as it generates negative energy. Always keep functional things in your home to keep positive energy flowing across the house.

In multistory apartments land is shared by various individuals and choosing the land location as per subjective preferences is limited. Though the beauty of Vastu Shastra is that it is not restricted to any format or design——-

Most builders today offer ‘Vastu’ compliant homes so now you can conveniently choose the right location and entrance of your new home as per Vastu Shastra and with minimum alterations and planning you can effectively design your new home and cultivate the positive benefits of Vastu Shastra.

Vastu Shastra for Entrance Door

The entrance door is like a mouth from where any energy source enters your home; therefore the entrance of the house should always be situated in an auspicious direction. The entrance door should always open clockwise. The exit of the entrance door should be facing outward towards east, north, or north-east direction to propel positivity, good luck, and prosperity. Avoid blocking the main door by keeping obstacles in fronts of it like a shoe rack, trash cans, or water-based decorative pieces as it will restrict the flow of positive energy coming into your home.

Use premium quality timber to build the entrance door; the size of the main door should be grand i.e. bigger than other doors in your house as the entrance is also considered as a doorway to victory which brings success, good health, and good luck.

Always make sure the entrance door is well lit with bright lights as bright lights generate positive energy; also beautify your door with decorative nameplates as it signifies richness. Avoid coloring the entrance door with black paint as black color attracts negative energy instead use bright color paints on the entrance door as it will attract positive energy; also avoid hanging any antiques or animal faces on the entrance door as antiques or animal faces draw dullness and bad luck.

Vastu Shastra for Living Room

The living room is very much like a book cover which narrates the story of your house; it is also a center point where most family and social gathering takes place. Hence always make the living room look more spacious by keeping it clutter-free. As per Vastu living room should face north, north-east, east, or northwest. Living rooms are mostly well-furnished with sofas, chairs, dining table electronics like TV, music system, etc. As per Vastu Shastra, heavy furniture should be placed in southwest or west whereas electronic appliances should be placed in the south-east section of the living room.

The living room is considered as the face of your home, therefore, it is important to decorate it with great intensity, make sure all the corners of your living room are well lit as corners act as a strong source of energy. Apply the mix of vibrant and earthy colors in the living room to create a balanced environment in the room. As per Vastu Shastra mirror in the living room should be placed in the north direction. Embellish living room with a grand crystal chandelier as it generates radiance of abundance by drawing positive energy.

Vastu Shastra for kitchen

They say, “Way to a man’s heart is through his stomach’. The kitchen has a significant influence on our health and relationships as it harbors a major energy resource of life food! Hence your kitchen should always radiate positivity through its decor. As per Vastu Shastra Tips to absorb good vibes windows in the kitchen should face towards north, north-east, or east direction, also the appropriate placement of kitchen appliances is very important for good health and prosperity. Apply vibrant colors to radiate more positivity in the kitchen environment.

A kitchen is a place that consists of all the ‘Panchbhootas’- earth, fire, water, air, and spirit. As per Vastu Shastra Tips ‘Agni’ is the major source of energy in the kitchen and ‘Agni’ prevails in the south-east direction of any house; hence kitchen should be located in the southeast direction of the house. If the kitchen is located in the north, north-east, or south-west direction it can hurt relationships and can lead to a strong difference of opinion amongst family members. As per Vastu Shastra Tips facing east while cooking will allow positive energy to pass onto your food which in turn will reflect in your health, happiness, and peacefulness.

As per Vastu Shastra, it is highly recommended that all the cooking appliances like gas cylinders, gas stoves, electric heaters, toasters, oven, microwave, etc. should be placed in the south-east zone of the kitchen.

Two major elements of the kitchen are water and fire hence it’s very important to create the right balance between the two to bring peace and richness in health and wealth. As per Vastu Shastra never place sink or washbasin parallel or adjacent to cooking appliances like gas, microwave, etc. because fire and water differ in characteristics. Water will defuse the progressive energy generated by fire which can lead to negativity in behavior and will disrupt harmony between family members and couples. All the water-centric bodies like washing machines, water pipes, washbasins, or kitchen sinks should always be placed in the north or northeast direction of your kitchen.

The kitchen acts as a major energy source for any house as it harbors raw as well as cooked food. Therefore food grains and refrigerators should always be placed in the south-west direction to bring more affluence and good fortune in your life.
