free will question

daniel ingram in mastering the core teachings of buddha wrote "rather than accepting our current level of intellectual, emotional, and paychological development as being beyond our power to change we consciously and explicitely adopt the empowering view that we can work with these aspects of our lives and change them for the better" and what about laziness as well ? is that not free will to change our laziness or if i consciously lift my hand up is that not a decision i can make ?

Something can be done about laziness. But it's not you/the ego doing it. Of course the ego will pretend it's responsible though.

It seems to be free will. There's no problem with that. Keep lifting up your hand. And when understanding comes, keep lifting up your hand.

so "I" can change my laziness consciously ?

i CAN choose to discipline myself or train awareness and go on a diet to lose weight or approach women on the street, i CAN choose to do those things right ?

i = awareness = present sensation

There can be a choice, and your thoughts will pretend that you did something to make this choice or the actions connected to it come about. Nothing about this mechanism changes, you've always felt like you have a choice, and there've always been apparent consequences to such choices. The question is if that's real, and if there is a spearate entity that could choose.

The i you think you are (ego) is illusory and can in fact be recognised as such an illusion. Awareness is what is, but awareness is not making decisions, it simply is. Awareness appears as whatever appears, and so it can happen that it appears as a choice being made, as change occurring, and even as an ego thinking it can make choices and control or manipulate reality.

"Your ego has about as much control over what goes on as a child sitting next to his father in a car with a plastic steering wheel."

Alan Watts

What happens, simply happens. It's not you who's doing it, but it's also not happening to you. You are the entire process.

"Doing" and "happening" are one and the same process.  It seems that this process is divided into what you are doing and what is happening to you, but this division is not real.

But you must understand that whether you realize this or not makes no difference to what's going on.

Go ahead, loose weight, approach women on the street, do whatever you woud like to do.

Because whether you do that or whether you sit at home and rot away on reddit or whatever - both are the cosmic process, both are happening and doing simultaneously, and neither. You see?

Lifting your hand is not free will, deciding to lift your hand is free will. There's a difference. One is actuality, one is potentiality.

It's like we are avatars in a video game. We seem to have some choices, but not every choice. Choices are already laid out for us within the game by the programmer. The results of those choices are already planned out to, but to know the result, you have to play the game.

@levani No one is aware of anything:) You can call this  awareness, but awareness simply is. There is no duality of the perceiver and the perceived. The words consciousness or awareness assume that there is something to be aware of, that there is some mechanism of perception going on. But perception is still inside the dream, so to speak. I prefer the word Being to emphasise this point. Perception/Awareness can obviously be used as a pointer to get you to discover what is really meant by Being. But Being itself is so direct, it just is, it doesn't come from anywhere and isn't created in any way. That's why it is so beautifully mysterious.

So what you are doing is you think you have a choice, but you've heard that there is no self, so who is choosing? Being. And in a way you could say that. Being appears or manifests as choice, but what you'll discover is that there is neither a mechanism of choice nor a real "anything". Choice is a concept, tree is a concept, dog is a concept, me is a pretty sneaky concept,... Reality, or Being, is nondual, which means precisely that there are no real entities. So what is a choice?

~10% of the time you are aware, meaning the other 90% you are sleeping or in a hypnotic state.
