In the Arab world, where racism is a deeply rooted yet rarely discussed issue, blackface comedy is facing a surge of criticism on social media, even forcing the occasional apology. But the practice remains widespread and acceptable enough to be a staple on major television networks.

The monkeys skit, shown on a private Libyan channel, may have been a particularly egregious example. But in the past year or so, comedy shows in Egypt and Kuwait have also featured blackface performances, and so has a music video by a Lebanese pop star.

It seems you have a different definition of racism than wikipedia

That is not true. Racism existed

Discrimination and persecution, yes. Islam's as guilty of that as most. Us humans have always divided ourselves up into competing groups. But my inclination at the moment is to see race as a modern idea, and we have a habit of projecting our modern world-views backwards in history onto people who had different world-views.

Or maybe I'm wrong, in which case there will be references in the historical record to people buying into racial identity rather than say, tribalism, nationalism, religionism etc. Do you know of them?

@Epikur Arabs are NOT the same as Muslims. Arabs can be racist, but Muslims can't. Anti-racism comes with Islam as a one package deal, and if you ask any serious Muslim they will tell you right off the bat that every Muslim is equally a servant to Allah, regardless of color or ethnicity. If you happen to see a Muslim "on paper" saying that a certain race is superior, then it's very likely coming from western trends and ideologies such as nationalism, because many of the modern "Muslims" tend to copy whatever westerners do/think. Most of the Arabic TV production culture is not Islamic in any way, and yet it's thought of as Islam because of this confusion between Arabs and Muslims. The blackface thing for example is a western concept and it's not even as common as you'd imagine in Arabic media because it's not popular.

Now enough with the nonsense and try-hard examples. None of the examples you provided say anything about racism in Islam. If anything, they demonstrate a mild degree of bias against people of color in some Arabs, which is not necessarily systemic by the way. However, even if I give you that, it's still not actual full degree racism, and the reason is because Islam is still predominant in the Arab world and has not yet disappeared. Show me clear-cut racism cases like the George Floyd case in the Arab world, or show me any slight bias against people of color under the Taliban government or the like, and then we can talk.

there was racism before westerners

Kinda irrelevant piece of info, though, because obviously nobody claimed otherwise. The claim is that westerners could not remove racism and are somehow still propagating it out to parts of the world where it was removed. Kinda like when you don't take the covid vaccine and then go out to spread the virus to other healthy people and then say that you did not invent the virus. Well, who the fuck cares?! Just stop the contagion where it's at and let others stay healthy.

Of course a lot of lefties claim that.

There is this very strong feeling of superiority sometimes, coming from Arabs, over the rest of the Muslim community. It is a pity. Really, I feel it very strongly. North Africans consider that they know religion better than Africans, because Arabic is their main language. Supposedly Islam came to their countries first. But this isn’t true! When you look at the history of the expansion of Islam, you see that this isn’t true… As a black African, you always have to endure remarks like ‘how come you speak Arabic?’, ‘you know how to do that?’, ‘but how do you pray?’ I always have to explain how I practise my religion.

When an African-American Muslim looks in the mirror, they don’t want to see an African. Because they think that a Muslim is Arab, Persian, South Asian. You are not Muslim unless you are of these backgrounds. I really get frustrated with that reality. I really do! Before your slave master was a European God figure. Now you think God is an Arab. Now you think God is a South Asian.

: ‘you literally have white converts coming, and I have seen it, within a couple of weeks, or couple of months, they are on the board of directors of the masjid. Now imagine a black Muslim! He has been around for thirty years. He barely gets returned greetings. White guy comes in, and in a month he is on the board.’ The undervaluation of African-American Muslims in comparison to white Muslims, especially in scholarship, is a very important issue for Souleymane

@Someone here As God said to Neale, “Religion is not good for you. Leave organised religion and enter spirituality.” Organised religion must die if society is to evolve.

Why does this forum hate conservatives so much? Islam is 50 times worse than conservatives.

fair-ish point

i do think it's interesting how for example many on the left love to trash the right (and vice versa of course)

they love to trash "white old men"

but they don't talk much about islam and the opression of women in those cultures etc.

I used to be "against" Islam to some capacity when I was younger, but that's because I was ignorant, disconnected emotionally, and consumed too much fear porn. Now I'm more realistic and indifferent towards it like most worldviews. I've gotten to a Yellow level of no longer being triggered by any particular perspectives or ideas.

Of course like any other major religion/cult it has it's issues, some of them systemic and inherit. But in the end the evolution and growth of such a large entity is a slow, messy, and difficult process. It's change and direction will be up to those within Islam, not without.

I'm not an alarmist..... but someone should break the glass. And pull that red T-lever down!

To get their attention, start lobbing the Light Grenades that burst and blind them with the truth!

An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth!

The most thing that annoyed me about islam is that almost 60% of the Quran is talking about the hell fire wherein the unbelievers will be burned for eternity.
