What do you say when people ask if you believe in God?

23 posts in this topic

Similar to @Vivaldo's post earlier, what do you guys tell people when they ask you if you're religious/spiritual/if you believe in God? Especially for those who've experienced God consciousness? Does your answer change depending on who's asking?

nobody really asks me that

but i remember mostly even before i got into "spirituality" someone asked me about god

and i said i do believe in a god but it's certainly not a man in the sky, more something like energy or the universe

the person who asked me was thinking about the biblical god i think

I live among Muslims, so I am the biggest believer in Allah. But not Jesus, or Jah, or any of the other infidels.

When I hangout out with my atheist friends, I'm like God who? Science is the solution.

My atheist friends know that I'm faking Islam in front of Muslims, but they don't know I'm faking materialism in front of them. LMAO!

Foolish until proven other-wise ;)

"What do you mean by God?" is the answer that comes to mind.

For people below a certain level of sophistication (usually SD-Blue or hyper-rationalist SD-Orange) whose idea of God is Sky Daddy, I usually just answer 'no' and leave it at that.

If I'm talking to someone a bit more sophisticated and open minded I might say that I'm atheistic about a supernatural god, but more agnostic about a Hegelian embodied God that's a manifestation of the universe becoming aware of itself

Believing is irrelevant.

Become conscious of what’s true for yourself, God or no God.

I say "I do. But not in the way that u define God".

And the follow up question always is "how do u define God?"

And my answer always is " I don't share it my thoughts and beliefs. I will not start a philosophical discussion with u" :D

@SonataAllegro I say that I believe in a higher power.

If they take the conversation to that level, I will start deconstructing their ideas about God by asking questions but will never explain what I know about God. If our deconstruction reaches to a certain level depending on the person, then we both have to agree that we don't know. That's how we get started.... From a state of not knowing.

but i think it could also help you with your "trauma" (for the lack of a better word) of your father and so on.

but if you ever try it just stay careful and humble.

When I talk to:
Blue and below people: no/yes depending on how it benefits me

Orange people: hell no full atheistic

Green and above:  Yes I do. We are all one and God is the all-encompassing consciousness that permeates experience. I do a more or less new-agey explanation depending on the context.
