Why does alchohol make me feel so much better?

35 posts in this topic

If alchohol is a poison, a desensensitiser 'the killer of soul'............. then why?

When I dirnk just  a few glasses of wine in the evening.

Do I feel kinder, happier, more energetic and free spirited?

Why if it is so bad, am I able to process my day and come to deeper truths?

I am wondering all this because i feel guilty every time I drink, as if I am some sort of addict.

But if it makes me feel better and doesnt harm anyone, is there a reason to cut it out?

All opinions welcome.

Don't you feel its side effects? It does harm your body. Don't fool yourself with tentations! I mean if you are gonna drink it, do it knowing that you are harming your body. It's like sugar: it feels good, gives you an extra boost, but it doesn't give you any energy actually. The contrary, it affects your body systems by worsening their states.

Instead, try nootropics for the mood.

I smoke. my friends smoke. what is the difference?

they do it out of a habit and I do it once or twice in a month without developing a habit.

wine is not bad, your clinginess/habit makes it bad for your health.

This is just it, it desensitizes you in the sense that whatever anxieties, worries and restrictions in your mind gets released for a moment, and that makes you feel freed from your own mental constraints. Allows you to feel happy.

Ask yourself, what is it you are running from, freeing yourself from, when you feel that intoxication take hold.

Notice how this happens very fast, only a sip or two of that wine and it lessens the weight on you soul.

Examine that need.

The real downside is that what's being surpressed by alcohol has a tendency to grow in strength by being systematically surpressed. The internal reward systems and brain hormones simply starts messing with you for you to come back for more. That's what you're feeling at the end of the day, when a craving to have a glass of wine kicks in, or looking forward to getting home after a bad day at work

It's a real slippery slope and often when catching onto the hold alcohol has gotten on ourselves, it's hard to get out and away from that feeling-suppressing pattern we've created.

There's definitely a reason to examine what you suppress that allows you to feel free and happy, and address that in some other way.

Even heroin will make you feel better in that moment. Any reason for a heroin addict to cut that out? Yes, extreme comparison, but it's the same effect they're slaves under, it's just extremely more powerful.

You shouldn't feel guilty. That guilt is calling for you to deal with something that needs attention.

It all depends. Is your addiction to alcohol a compulsive behavior? (compulsive means it's really hard to not quit that behavior). If it's not compulsive, and you are disciplined enough to regulate your alcohol consumption, and you still think/feel guilty, then I'd contemplate that feeling of guilt. It's better to find a balance for yourself with your wine. Don't drink too much you put your health at risk, but don't suppress the drinking like a religious person suppresses masturbation. If it's occasional, let yourself enjoy the wine.

Why does pooping feel so good?

Edit: I can’t help you because I don't know sorry. But like, it was a good question. Why does anything feel good at all?

It gives you an altered state of consciousness. In moderation, alcohol isn't harmful. It's just that you have to be careful not to make it a habit and start to over consume.

A part of it is a gnawing feeling of emptiness and pain inside. That is what all of society is distracting themselves from. It just manifests in different ways for everybody. For some people, they turn to gambling, porn, sex, various drugs, shopping, adrenaline junkies, mindless entertainment, etc...

Ever wonder why can't we just sit still and be? It's extremely difficult to not want to distract yourself with your phone, or get caught up in your thoughts, or some other type of distraction. It's extremely uncomfortable and painful to just sit there and not have anything to distract and stimulate yourself. That is where the challenge and hard work lies.

I appreciate this question, however, heroin clearly has detremental effects which cause one's life / health / mind / soul to be destroyed. The cost far outweighs the benefits.

However, with alchohol, I cannot see how my life is worse from drinking it, apart from the fact that others tell me it is bad. I can only see that it makes me feel good in the evening. And therefore I feel guilty, whcih is the negative, because I am told 'it's an addiction, escapism.. etc'

I dont have hangovers, I dont lost productivity, I am slim, I excersize a lot, I socialise, I work hard! I work on myself spiritually and emotionally.

However, I have many friends who dont drink who are far worse health wise.

Hmmmm...

@Seed Your attitude is very foolish and dangerous. Every single thing you said in this post makes me think that your on the path to becoming a (high-) functioning alcoholic - which will eventually of course turn into plain alcoholism, without the "functioning".

Alcohol addiction is utterly detrimental to your physical and psychological health, you're social life (yes, much sooner than you think), your finances, your career, your family, everything. I'm not kidding.

And the fact that you ask and say such things as

tells me that you don't even know a bit about how dangerous alcohol abuse is. Which leaves me wondering, how old are you?

Actually, you don't. It only seems that way.

Yeah. Maybe because there's something to it. Remember you didn't feel guilty when you had a few beers with your mates? Before you started drinking alone? Guess where the guilt comes from.

Yes. In fact, there are millions of reasons. Millions of people who started you exactly like you and who sad the exact same things. "but it makes me feel good, why cut it out?" or "but I can still go to work, so what's the problem?".

Yeah. And then after a few years they have lost everything they cared for because alcohol made them care for nothing but alcohol itself.

It does kill your soul, together with your body.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alcohol_abuse

Alcohol is the single most detrimental substance you could abuse. It's easily and cheaply available and socially accepted and even celebrated. And it's a neurotoxin that will not only cause harm to your brain (all of it, since alcohol is active in every part of you brain) but which will damage your organs (liver, digestive tract and cardiovascular system).

Only because you don't have a hangover doesn't mean that alcohol doesn't have damaging effects on your body, you can be 100% sure that it does, there is not even a question about this.

Well if you want to find out, keep drinking and telling yourself how good it is for you.

Ok now, I'm not saying that alcohol itself is bad, I occasionally enjoy some beer or wine myself. My post aims at making sure that you understand what you're possibly getting yourself into.

When you have to justify your drinking, either to yourself or to others, that's the first sign that you're solidly standing with one foot in alcoholism.

If you feel guilty for drinking of if you're wondering whether you are addicted, lay off for at least two weeks. And see how it goes. If even the prospect of not drinking for two weeks makes you feel nervous, you should seriously lay off, and for more than two weeks at that.

Take care of yourself.

Questionable. Studies on low alcohol consumption are conflicting.

@Seed You may not have hangovers but you are slightly more anxious and irritable the next day, even if that effect is so small you don't notice it

The fact that you are questioning your drug-use is making me believe that you have a problem with it.  Someone who doesn't have an issue with alchohol never questions or worries about his drug use.

Drugs trick your brain into releasing more dopamine and other neurochemicals. This is why they feel so good. In theory you could drink 1-2 glasses of wine every day and never face major health issues even though it is a poison. But more than that it is not recommended.

My story:

Coming from Hungary - where we drink a lot - both my father and grandfather were huge drinkers, consuming alcohol everyday till they get drunk. Quite common here. Having the same tendencies in our bloodline I wanted to make it stop as it brought a lot of problems into our family.

How I eliminated alcohol out of my life?

I had a strategy, which worked for me. When I was in university I drank every 4 months really lot till I passed out. I had few friend guarding me, making sure I'm safe.

It happened 3 times. Between those occasions I only drank a few beers per week. After my last big drinking event - when I drank a whole bottle of vodka at once - I never drank any strong alcohol since then. It's been 3+ years. My body has such a harsh reaction against Vodka for example that I almost start to vomit when I smell it - not even tasting it. Now I drink 1 beer / month on average. And taste some good wine occasionally.

I don't advise you to have a stick up in your ass and be religous about NOT drinking alcohol. Life is short, be smart about it.

I went through my sex and alcohol phase to get it out of my system. It helped to integrate stage orange better, seeing the limitations of hedonism.

Good luck mate

I had a drinking problem for a couple years and that shit did NOT make me feel good. It exacerbated all my personal issues and made me hate myself.

Stopped drinking for a few years, and now I can't stomach more than 1-2 drinks on rare occasions. My hangovers last longer than the buzz and if i'm not in a social environment it makes me ruminate negatively about my life. I also noticed since I began to do spiritual work that I really notice how much alcohol affects my judgement, and I really don't like how out of control it makes me feel.

@Seed How often do you drink and how many glasses exactly? Only wine?

Can you easily stop after one glass or do you feel a need to 'get to' a certain level of being drunk?

Hmmmm...

Anything is fine in moderation.

Well, not heroin, but most things :)

That said if you are drinking 2-3 drinks a day that's not really moderation imo and can lead to an addiction or harmful effects in the years to come so keep an eye on it.  To me 2 drinks a week would be moderation.  I think it's important to he content with your default state of consciousness and not "rely" on alcohol- because that's when it can grab you.
