"Stage Theory is BS" debate

7 posts in this topic

There is an interesting debate happening on multiple Facebook pages about whether Stage Theory including SD and Integral is "BS" and "colonial." Originally posted by Nora Bateson, daughter of Gregory Bateson, and followed up by Hanzi Freinacht (author of the metamodernism book "The Listening Society"). Lots of prominent stage Yellow thinkers contributing to the conversation.

It's BS in the same way that Newtonian mechanics is BS.

For anyone who hasn't read Hanzi's two books (The Listening Society and Nordic Ideology), I'd consider them necessary and logical extensions to move on to after learning Spiral Dynamics for the added perspective it brings on Developmental Stage Models.

Not only do the two books hit upon many of the same points as someone like Ken Wilber, but they do so in a very accessible and engaging way (due to the somewhat disarming tone of sincere irony that the authors give to the fictional Hanzi).

The Listening Society

Can vouch for this, incredible book! At least as juicy as all the Spiral stuff

Stage theory is also non-colonial in the sense that it's not a rigid us-them paradigm but one that allows for change (it's non-essentialist).
