"Only insane people have a purpose" - Sadhguru

Excerpts from the video, Sadhguru's speech:
“Isn’t it fantastic that if there’s no purpose, you have nothing to fulfill, you can just live? No, but you want a purpose and not a simple purpose, you want a God-given purpose. It’s very dangerous. People who have a God-given purpose are doing the cruellest things on the planet because when you have a God-given purpose, life here becomes less important than your purpose. (...) The greatest thing about life is that there is no meaning to it and there is no need for it to have a meaning. It’s the pettiness of one’s mind that seeks a meaning because psychologically you will feel kind of unconnected with life if you don’t have a purpose and a meaning. People are constantly trying to create these false purposes. (...) Don’t look for a purpose because if you’re looking for a purpose, you’re seeking madness. If you find one, you are mad. If you think you’ve found a purpose in life, you’ve for sure gone crazy. Only insane people have a purpose. These are things you create in your mind. (...) The purpose of life is to live and to live totally.”

What Sadhguru says in this video confuses me because a lot of us here are exploring our life purpose. Why does he say that having a God-Given purpose is dangerous? I understand what he means by people who create false purposes but what about people who are seeking a pure and spiritual purpose? Why does he say to not find a purpose...

He is mostly saying that when we imagine we have a God-given purpose, we're fabricating a belief that the universe is compelling us to do something. The trap is that it's egoically driven. There is no "need" to do anything. Anytime we believe we've been given a purpose by God, we will feel disappointed and even broken if we fail to achieve our goal. At worst, we might even harm other people to accomplish our task.

Look at jihad or similar ideas, for example. When people believe that their purpose is divine, they will stomp on "normal" people and things to achieve their aims.

He is taking about religious fanatics and this sort of people in general. Not people who pursue yoga or art. Isn't it obvious?

@Husseinisdoingfine Are you a Shia?

"Not believing your own thoughts, you’re free from the primal desire: the thought that reality should be different than it is. You realise the wordless, the unthinkable. You understand that any mystery is only what you yourself have created. In fact, there’s no mystery. Everything is as clear as day. It’s simple, because there really isn’t anything. There’s only the story appearing now. And not even that.” — Byron Katie

Your purpose should be to differentiate between the relative and The Absolute xD

@Carl-Richard Am I understanding well your comment by replacing the word "relative" for "Actuality" and "The Absolute" for God or the present moment or Truth?

The relative is dual. The Absolute is non-dual.

Duality is comprised of two parts that make up a whole (e.g. hot-cold, up-down, big-small).

From the relative perspective, duality is two. From The Absolute perspective, duality is one.

From the relative perspective, you can choose between many different purposes. From The Absolute perspective, there is only one purpose, which also means there is no purpose.

Just because Sadhguru said something doesn't mean it will apply to 100% of humans. Maybe for those who can transcend the desire for having a purpose and desire for meaning. But most people, even those following him are not at that level of development and never will be.

If you have no purpose in this life, what ar you going to do? It will be easier to seduce you into some half-assed soul-crushing job because you gotta pay your bills somehow. Having no purpose makes you susceptible to corruption and to compromise on your integrity and highest values.

If one does not know to which port one is sailing, no wind is favorable.”

Finding a meaningful life purpose is a great way to be able to transcend the necessity for purpose and meaning. It is more difficult to do that when your ass is owned by corporate

I would continue the sentence like this, in order to make it clearer.

"Only insane people have a purpose... Sane people are their own purpose."

In other words, when you have a purpose, your purpose is separated from you by definition. It's given to you externally, even if you built it from the bricks you took from the outside. It's all mental and it must be: it's constructed through and with ideas, taken from books, movies, religion, Youtube videos, or whatever. Since it's impossible for a mind to get to know what is a life purpose - because it's always unfolding new, ideas are tags of the past - and, assuming it gets to know it, how to pursue it - also because seeing in your future self might prevent you from getting there, since you know you have to die as you actually are. When we think we can only compare, but it's impossible to do it with ourselves and others, simply because we're brand new. A life purpose is therefore developed by being it, and feeling it more then thinking it. The only thing we can do to pursue it is through removing those things that prevents us from expressing it more intensely, but what is the life purpose, nobody knows. And since we can only try to reach what we know, the life purpose is unreachable. It's already here.

Look at Sadhguru's actions more than his words.

Does he look like a guy without a clear purpose?

Sadhguru is refering to the need of a sense purpose. You can create a purpose without having that need of Drive. Non doership is what he means. Because everything is already complete there is really no need. Its a tricky thing as always...

This sounds a lot like Osho. I hear a lot of happy, enlightened dudes saying shit like this and trust me, a relaxed, totally present, no concern about the future or past, abandoning oneself to the innocence of the moment, is FUCKING awesome. But it's useful to find a career that matches with you and your joys in life. So that's what a life purpose is useful for. Career. Work on that. But do it with a purposeless, joyful just because attitude. Let go and enjoy life! Don't take life too seriously.
