Authority is corruptive, because it's a tool used by the egoic mind. Animals in alpha positions have authority over others in nature, but they don’t do it to feel better about themselves. It’s a survival instinct. Mistreating prisoners or whatever isn’t a survival instinct, or used to protect a society – it’s a tool used by the ego to feed itself and become more powerful.

Often greedy egotistical people climb their way up through the social pyramid. No wonder such things happen in powerful positions.
