should I spend 2K On a laptop ?

31 posts in this topic

I am considering spending $2K on a laptop ... because it's such a crucial investment.

I believe I can make millions & millions out of this & other technologies, so in the larger scheme of things, 2 grand is NOTHING.

Abundance mindset too states that you shouldn't communicate to yourself that you're poor.

I want to buy microsoft surface laptop 4, 16gb Ram, 13.5 inch or surface book pro

My laptop must at least have 16GB Ram & be fast with modern features.

It seems that touch screen capability is an excellent productivity feature, to not harness all is just stupid af IMO

These laptops are well optimized with windows & one note. It has a pen & touch screen option & dictation ect... tons of great features for taking notes, communication ect..

If you have better suggestions let me know, but I'm willing to spend tons of money on technology because in my situation, it will allow me to make millions and millions.

Why so many people so frugal, it's stupid that why they stay poor, abundance mindset.

Well it depends if you need the extra functions on a more expensive computer. It might be cool if you have a pen and touchscreen and maybe would be useful if your some kind of artist but if youre only using it to setup an ecomerce business then its kinda pointless. Also if you do have 2k to spend on it, lets say you spend 1k instead and invest the rest into the stock market or whatever, that 1k is still yours plus its made some interest, whereas the computer you bought has depreciated in value and you might not have used any of the extra features that made it worth 2k in the first place.

Its good to have balance, you dont want to be so frugal you dont buy anything but on the flip if you buy everything just because you end up becoming a consumer who has to have the best of the best, these people never become wealthy because they only own liabilities that depreciate rapidly.

but the best laptops are assets, mediocre laptops are liabilities.

I didn't phrase my question well, I used the touch screen & pen once in a Microsoft store, & it seemed REALLY USEFUL & worthwhile.

I want to know if others have these laptops / tablets because It could be just my naïve consumer mindset.

I don't do art, I still believe the touch screen & pen speeds up productivity, perhaps I am deluded.

Well you have to work out whether you want it because its new and shiny and has a pen or you actually need it.

When i say liability i mean just something that depreciates in value as oppose to something that increases in value which would be an asset. All laptops will depreciate in value so it just comes down to whether that extra use youll get out of it is worth 1k more. As i said if its not you can put that 1k into something else in which case whatever you put it into would be an asset as it will accumulate interest. Its like if you want to buy a car for 50k on finance, that car will depreciate by half in 5 years say, so the usage costs you 25k over 5 years, did you really need to buy that car for that much? Probably not as a car for 10k would do the same thing, then you could invest that 40k and make a nice amount of interest. Your example is the same its just on a lesser scale, but if you get in the habit of just buying more expensive things you will never build wealth.

@Striving for more  If you're so sure that this laptop will enable you to earn millions, then why are you even here asking us if you should buy it?  Just get it and don't give it any more thought.

It sounds more like you're trying to justify an unnecessary purchase to yourself simply because you have an urge to spend some money, though.  It's quite a hilarious concept for a thread, considering the nature of the forum you're posting on.

I made a thread becuase I don't full trust my self with anything.

a fast laptop in general is certainly a gateway to millions in this day & age, it's obvious.

Whether I need a flashy fast laptop is debatable.

There's not much point commenting unless you own the laptops I've mentioned or have a better budget suggestion.

The million dollar question is this. What for do you need it? I am asking this because you do not have a million dollars yet. And if you don't buy such an expensive laptop, well then you have more funds for your business idea that can make you the millions or have a safety pillow or money for financial stability so you don't burn out while chasing the million.

Let me replace computer with a vehicle. Are you going to buy more expensive vehicle, because the vehicle is a crucial part for you to get where you need to, so you can potentially make millions and the vehicle being essential part of your workflow to get to the million. You will probably just buy a vehicle that serves its purpose and is not too expensive, but in good condition.

Why am I saying this - i recently bought 1k laptop with R5 and 8 GB ram and 512 MB ssd and pen/touchscreen is not bad either. I recently bought vivo flipbook and it's pretty fast for casual use - browsing, documwnting, sheets, even audio production, and its super small, alumunium exterior. It was surely a nice purchase. Do you really need the newest gen products? Sure, for things like graphic design or AI, animation, game engines, simulation programs, programming software, streaming software. Probably many things...

I am not saying do not buy. But clarify for yourself, do you need it?

I am saying this from experience. I bought a 1.5k syntesizer. After more than a half year it turned out to be ok, not good, not bad. If I knew some other synth from the same synth series I would save like 800 euros and just get more appropriate synthesiezer. The synth i have is a machine and I haven't figured it out so I am far from the celling and I need to spend alot more time to get something out from it. Luckily for me it introduced me to new styles of music and new music vocabulary, principles of sound synthesis e.c.t. so in general, even if I want to sell it, it was not too bad of a purchase, it was ok, but not great. Maybe with more unimportant gear there would be lesser interest. Expensive can make you inspired or force you to do something with it. If you buy the computer to re-watch sitcoms like The Office, or surfing the net, deluding yourself with the potentiality as an idea then you don't need it.

@Striving for more totally, spend some good money on a good laptop.

But tbf, the return on investment kinda drops after around 700 bucks. You probably wouldn't notice the difference between a 2k vs a 700$ laptop unless you do some video rendering or gaming. I personally feel like touch is kinda gimmicky.

I bought a zenbook from Asus 1.5 years ago. It has 16gb ram, i7 gen 10, 500gb ssd, and an additional graphics card.  it was like 1.1k €. so pretty much everything you mentioned just without the touch screen.

I don't think it's a bad idea to spend a decent amount on technology that you are going to use a lot. But if I'd be in your shoes, I'd do some research to get the best bang for your buck. This one seems to be cheaper and meets your requirements as well.

Maybe wait till you find a good deal. I've heard the Dell xps series is also really good.

@Striving for more Why do you think you not touch screen? I heard it's rather quite useless.

You don't need to spend that much. You can get used one with good specs. I bought few years ago and it still up to date. It has 32 GB of RAM and i7 processor which is maybe 10-15% slower that than modern i7 - the only bigger difference is power efficiency.

I depends on what you are doing. I think that working on a large 4K screen (>=32) is going  to be more productive than using small laptop. I would rather kill myself if I had to use 13" screen :D

I definitely wouldn't buy Surface because you can't even easily change thermal paste or replace SSD if you need.

Wealthy mindset is about delaying instant gratification, avoiding excess spend on depreciating assets, & prioritizing elimination of detrimental liabilities (ex: high interest debt). Extra  cash is viewed as a conduit towards future compounded gains, not increased consumption. 2k is not really that much to be spending on something that is work related. Go for it.

If you want a robust workstation I recommend Lenovo. They make high-quality laptops that are plenty powerful and not cheap. I don't think they have touch screens, drawing pens and other small features, but I guarantee they will outlast any cheap brands like Acer and HP by a long shot. A Dell or a Mac would be my second choice, and the rest of the brands shouldn't be seriously considered at all.

It could last 4 years or so if it's a good laptop, so think about it is as 500 a year then divide that by 12 to get around 40 bucks per month? It's not too bad. I use my Laptop 10 hours a day everyday for work so that's a decent investment.

Now the most important thing for me in a laptop is a good camera-in-laptop and powerful microphone because nowadays there are too many webinars and online meetings. Reliability is also extremely important. You can also buy external microphones and lightings.

1) you here asking here us for reassurance clearly indicates you have some doubts about your investment and perhaps its ability to help you generate the millions. From my observation, this is not how to harness law of attraction.

2) do a thorough research on what kind of devices are out there, coz this is a hefty some of money. Compare your 2k laptop with one for around 1.2k... look up unsponsored reviews etc. You can put that 800usd to getting good mouse, keyboard, display or a stash of nootropics, which can boost your productivity much more than a shinier device.

3) I have amazing experience with Lenovo ideapad... I've had this laptop for over 6 years of daily use, regular travels and it still functions well. Be aware of the device's repairability and upgradability (iFixIt has good scores/forum), coz when a key on my keyboard started to misbehave 5 years in, I just ordered a new one and replaced it. I also upgraded from HDD to SDD, so my laptop has actually gotten better over time! I dont have good experience with HP.

4) touchscreen is an overkill gimmick in most cases, if you are not an artist. You can get Rocketbook for 50usd (or other "digital paper" products) and it will be better for digitalizing your note-writing and sketching.

So what you are saying is should I spend 2K to make millions? Why would you need another person to answer this no brainer question?

A good part of that is just knowing what you are buying. You could get a laptop with 16gb of ram that probably has plenty of power for $500. Even cheaper if you shopped around since there is so much abundance. ;)
