Lol, funny how Leo just released an episode on Holism and here you are being reductionistic while arguing which is more useful, science or philosophy... Both, silly. :D

@Leo Gura Or you could simply stop shitting on science and academia as if they're your enemy.

@Husseinisdoingfine Same bro.

I'm in a similar situation. We recently had an assignment where we could write on any topic we want. So I decided to write about consciousness. When I turned my paper in it was quite obvious that the teacher had no idea what I was talking about.

When I start to inquire about the teacher's personal beliefs, they start to deflect by saying: "uhh Aristotle said this.." or "Plato said that..".

It's quite obvious that they have never contemplated anything in life for themself, all they do is remember what the most mainstream philosophers have said.

Was it literally any topic you want or was it any topic within the curriculum?

False

You wouldn't be able to run actualized.org if it wasn't for science?:D

You know, electricity, internet, computers, cameras etc.

@Carl-Richard It had to be on any philosophical question of our choosing - so I picked "What is consciousness?"

I think it was mainly practice on how to deal with philosophical questions.

The Intro Level Philosophy course I took back in College felt like a Middle School class that I had the 'privilege' paying money for.

Kind of hilarious how flattened and dull interesting concepts can become when you try to cram twenty different philosophers together into a four month course.

If you're interested in particular philosophers like Nietzsche or Camus, you'd be better off just picking up a few of thier books and reading through them.

Just because Academic philosophy courses do a soulless job of introducing people to Philosophical ideas and concepts doesn't mean that the subject is devoid of value. Far from it I'd argue.
