Make sure to get those electrolytes in during the fast, otherwise you'll experience extreme fatigue ( sodium potasium magnesium and possibly more) . Also when breaking the fast what worked for me was some 100% pure pea protein isolate or some lean lean meat ( maybe Algae for veganos) . I've broken numerous of 1-3 day water fasts with fish , vegetables, eggs , fruits and other stuff and the results were nightmare.

Try raw carrot salad on empty stomach and eat nothing for 45 minutes after. Strands should look like this; long as possible. The long strands clean out your digestive system. Add white vinegar and melted coconut oil (natural antibiotics) and plain salt. It tastes great too. That's not me, I just found an image. They seem to have added butter -- I prefer coconut oil as it's pro-thyroid and a stronger antibiotic.

Not true. People have cured SIBO with water fasting. It is not guaranteed, but it should have a pretty high success rate. It's just rarely done because a 14 day water fast is not easy to do.

That's the whole point, to reset your gut. You can build it back up with probiotics after the fast is done.

Well, that's just wrong. Bacteria dies after about 10 days. That's why elemental diets are used.

You could try an elemental diet. It is costly though. About $800 for 14 days of elemental food powder.

The whole point of an elemental diet is to starve out all bacteria, good and bad. Then rebuild with probiotics.

Elemental diet seems to work for about 80% of people if done for 2 weeks. Goes up to 85% if done for 3 weeks. This is much easier than a fast, but you'll be spending $800 and you won't get the full healing benefits of a long fast.

That's too short. It takes about 10 days for bacteria to die off, and to be safe you'd want to go 14.

The key is to kill everything in the gut and start with a clean slate. If you leave it half-dead, that's no good.

Fasting also has many other healing benefits that go beyond starving out bacteria. 14 days should give your gut time to repair and heal itself like never before in your life.

It did not work for me at all. But it works for many people. Seems like 60%ish.

Rifaximine is also ridiculously expensive. About $3000 in the US. You can order from Canada/India for $200-300, but it takes a month to arrive. You could also try to get free samples from your doctor. If he's nice he'll give you a 2 week supply. But samples are not always available.

I was wondering why you didn't  attack the unhealthy bacterias with heavy doses of antibiotics, but then read until the end and cringed at the American Healthcare system... 3k for Rifaximine!!!
Here in Italy where healthcare is basically free with the prescription you have Rifaximine for 8 euros, a package that includes 12 tablets... Can you get someone to send it to you from countries where it is inexpensive? Rifaximine is a very good antibody for gut issues like SIBO and it can help you if you do a good therapy with it, probably more than other unconventional treatments, which might help you but seem like torture like the fast you are talked about

Personally I'm doing a 14 day water fast. I'll talk about it on my blog soon.

You should do stool, blood, and breath tests to accurately diagnose your condition. Once you know what exactly is the problem, then you can begin treatments.

If you know for sure you have SIBO you must definitely go Low FODMAP or even No FODMAP. And you can try herbal antibiotics. If those don't help, you can try rifaximine prescription antibiotic. If that doesn't work, 14 day water fast.

I just hope the fast works out fine and safe for you. I'm not sure about its safety but please stay safe with whatever you do.

I will pray for your well being and health. :)

Hope you recover from all your struggles.

O.o:o daaaaaamn !!!! What the actual fuck! You get it for free on prescription in UK if you are employed or for small fee.

Well, that's cause you're communists.

"When bacteria are threatened they amalgamate and form biofilms which protect them from anti-microbials and provides them with sustenance  for an extended period of time. So quite simply, a 30 or even a 60 day water fast is not going to kill the SIBO, or other bacterial problems in the gut".

Biofilms can be disrupted with digestive enzyme supplements.

This is just dumb because elemental diet definietely kills SIBO in 80% of cases. Fasting is just a stronger version of that.

Any intuitive clue 'bout what caused your SIBO?

Leo but really, why don't get someone to send you Rifaximine, basically almost everywhere in Europe you get it basically for free like not even 10$, it will save you money and time and torture with other less conventional methods, which might be effective I'm not denying that but I think they should be secondary to antibiodies which for SIBO are way less helpful compared to their side effects, even if you take them for a few months

@Leo Gura Maybe slow digestion caused by thyroid issues? If so there is a high chance the sibo will return seeing as the slow digestion is not resolved? What is the plan for this?

@integral Look for triggering toxins and foods which cause leaky gut over time which then devolves into SIBO and autoimmunity and other problems.

The root cause seems to be triggering toxins and foods. But it's very hard to discover what those triggers are. Could be anything you drink or put in your mouth. Or even the dirty air you breathe every day from the nearby highway.

I suspect that eating lots of raw honey might have caused my condition. Raw honey could have lots of pesticides and chemicals in it. But it's so hard to know for sure. These are just guesses.

@Bando It probably makes better sense in the long run just to do something healthy "normal". Taking honey like that... its very unclear.

I REALLY struggled with SIBO for about two and a half years. SIBO is very tricky and different for each individual.   Every time i ate i would get extreme acid reflux from the bacteria in my small intestate (where they don't belong) doing what bacteria do and the gas bi product would go back into my stomach instead of down through the intestinal track  and  wreak havoc every time I ate.  I had ridiculously excessive farts that were unspeakably putrid.  The farts were so frequent and pungent that it  effected every part of my life. You can't work around people when you're emitting the foulest smell known to man out of your ass every few minutes. You certainly can't sleep with your spouse. You can be around people. I cramped and pooped all throughout the day everyday. The consistency and smell was sick poop. Really nasty stuff. The intensity of pain in some of those episodes of cramps was some of the most intense pain I'd ever experienced. At its worse I would have to lay in the bath tube in the fetal position with the shower running and just poop on myself under the shower. The pain was so intense i was unable hold myself up on the toilet. I felt like I was going to pass out many times during the worst cramps. I would perspire, moan and groan, yell. They weren't always so severe tho. I was desperate for relief and answers. I saw GI specialist that ran endoscopy, colonoscopy, stool samples, labs. They had no diagnostic methods for SIBO. I go to the major university hospital, the most advanced and equipped in my state. I tried to guide them in the SIBO direction but they dismissed it. They had exhausted all of their methods. My health and healing was my responsibility alone. There was  nowhere else to go. I researched and tried every antimicrobial herb I could, dozens or more. I tried different diets, low FMAP, vegan, carnivore, juice, and on and on. I tried extreme extended fasts combined with aggressive flushes. I had the most success with supplement called ATRANTIL . I took dailyit for a long time, 6 months maybe more, And ate plenty of green bananas spaced out throught the day towards the end of the treatment. It didn't heal it all at once, but it was much needed relief and the start of my gradual healing. It would improve almost totally and then flare up again in cycle for about another year. Its finally totally healed. No rank farts, my poop is healthy, and no more cramps. I eat a clean mostly plant based diet. About 50-70% of my diet is vegetable.  The green bananas were a huge part of the healing process. All the shit I tried and put myself through and something so siimple. Anyways, maybe my SIBO story will be some kind of assistance to someone else suffering. I hope Leo has made progress. As I listened to his story I absolutely felt his pain. My SIBO bro! :D    Love and best wishes
