What Value Do Musicians Provide?

70 posts in this topic

Leo says "Be a massive value provider!"

Well how to provide value as a musician?

Heres what I have come up with after some short contemplation...

•Aural pleasure

Learn what sounds good obviously, dont sell the sound of a fork scraping a plate, learn what good audio is. Know your basics.

•emotional stimulation

Whether youre selling excitement or sadness, learn how to do it well, what chords on the piano provide what emotion? emotion is super-addicitve if you can sell it right!

•emotional comfort

•inspiration

If youre a good lyric writer, give them your story, make them feel like there is a bright future ahead, this will keep them coming back when theyre down!

•Intellectual stimulation

Give your listener a challenge, make them sit on the edge of their seat, be bold, dont give them lullabies, be bold! Dont be afraid to be abrasive in your sounds, chords or whatever it is.

•novelty stimulation

Give them something they havent heard before. People love novelty! Make sure its not too unfamiliar though, keep one foot in the boat.

•teach

Teach them something new, some new way of making music (Obviously more for people who are musicians)

•image/identity

make them feel like theyre part of a cool movement, make them feel like theyre listening to some cutting edge stuff, make them feel smart! people love feeling smart

•social bonding

Make sure you fulfill atleast 50% of this, one without the other usually falls flat.

Are you kidding me?

Music can move mountains. Music has the power where language fails.

It's the language of the Gods.

Everyone understands music even if they don't understand lyrics.

Exactly. ;)

But noones gonna buy your music if it doesnt move those mountains.

The music business is so oversaturated, everyone takes music for granted, you have to provide massive value to stand out.

@Rilles that's about marketability, not so much about music itself

First create music that you like. Then look for market and commercial compatibility. Having a good social network helps in selling your art in better places.

I agree that it's saturated.  But so is literally everything else. Try your luck but don't invest too much money or time.

Try many things so you have better chances of hitting a jackpot.

The music is the marketability. The better the music the easier to market. Music is about holding someones attention so you cant market something that doesnt hold attention, if I marketed something else like a pill to make your hair grow back after balding that would be easy.

Oh, I am making music I like, and its going well for me, I have made a little following, Im just making this thread because I like to share my thoughts if any musician reads it, because I know there are musicians on this forum.

@Rilles  I hope it sells.

But I wouldn't pressure you to create better music because it's a natural gift

@Rilles that's not a plan. Create a tangible plan. You need plan B if you're going to be into arts.

Work on your plan B right now. So by the time you pass out university, your plan B is already ready.

Well in my opinion. Whatever you create is whatever you want. The market side can be a influencial on your music because you might want to create music what the market wants instead of what you want.

Have you heard of Ikigai? Thats what Im trying to follow. I agree, its very easy to create what the market wants only, but that would make my art go down in value because it would be generic. ;)

Probably rock, metal and classic. My favorite musician though is Bob Dylan. What about you?

Dylan is awesome!

Im pretty much an electronic music-head:D IDM and downtempo, for example Flying Lotus, off the top of my head.
