Advanced practitioners, what exactly is Placebo?

17 posts in this topic

I was wondering if someone here, maybe from deep consciousness work or research has interesting insights into the Placebo effekt and how it works on a deep level?

I would define it as the finding that participation in rituals has an effect on people.

Classical medicine knows this because it needs to be compensated for in scientific studies (examining a patient, diagnosing and giving them a pill is a ritual after all). At the same time the scientific paradigm sort of denies the effect because rituals have an unscientific or dirty feel to them, and the placebo pill is associated with lying to the patient.

On the other side I would define shamanism as an honest use of the placebo effect. Shamans invent all sorts of crazy rituals and practices that have beneficial effects on their participants, often by guiding them into ecstatic states. The rituals might or might not be backed by some kind of lore, the important part is the they work. I've recently come across the idea that the rock star is a modern version of the shaman archetype.

It is kinda already know how it works, body and brain are connected, which forms what we would call mind, our immunity  capabilities in part  are based on our state of mind which either decrease ,or increase our immunity and body functions.

What placebo does is change this state, makes you less stressed, worried, focused on your illness, which boosts your immunity , body functions.

Problem of placebo is that it just leap of fait, it gives us insight into what our mind is capable of, but rest is really up to person, will he believe that it is cure, how he will act on it.

Although it is important to capture all elements that are involved for different purposes, you can't just so easily make such changes into your reality, that is why tricking, superstition, belief is so powerful, trying to trick yourself when you know it is a trick is not easy.

Also you probably mean placebo having effect on behaviour with drug effects and so on, it is bit different, but if you understand above, you should understand why such changes can happen too.

Reality is hierarchical. Physical reality is prior to imagination, but nevertheless, imagination still affects physical reality.

Then what is prior to physical reality if imagination is secondary? For there to be “physical reality”, there has to be imagination first

Why should there be imagination first? Where in the universe is that written?

@Jaka Pirs Hanzic Lol. Language is a poor medium for transferring truth, and it is ultimately paradoxical. Use words as pointers and look at what they're pointing to. Don't take language too literally or seriously.

Well the Placebo effect can be viewed from a western medicine perspective but I doubt it captures the whole reality of it. I am more interested in its’ deeper spiritual aspects

Your reality and everything you consider to be "real", is you. "What you think, you become" isn't a metaphor, it's the fundamental principle. Placebo is simply becoming what you think, in action.

The placebo effect is another "scientific" phenomenon that points to the truth that you are God.

The placebo effect shows us the power of the mind. It reveals to us that our reality is shaped my our mind and not vice versa.

You can take a fake drug and heal yourself with your mind, but you can't have a fake mind and heal yourself with a drug.

What I mean is that the mind ultimately does the healing. The most drugs can do is stimulate a physiological response that initiates a reaction of the mind. Without the mind, there would be nothing to heal because there would be no perceived injury. Also the mind actually created the drug in the first place. All of reality first came from mind. Every building you see, every invention invented, first started as an idea. Part of awakening is realizing that all these ideas are YOUR ideas. These ideas are all part of one mind. One infinite intelligence. One God. YOU.

When this is contemplated deeply enough, you'll realize that there was never any separation between the mind and body or the physical and mental.

Although this is an abstraction, it's useful to see the perspective that everything is mind at its core, just like a dream. In reality, you are neither body nor mind but a middle way that can only be known when both sides of the duality collapse into one.
