What is happiness?

172 posts in this topic

Alright.. Beyond just working.. Eating.. Shiting.. And fucking.. Getting old.. And getting sick.. And dying......... What is it really all about? What takes you beyond the mundane? What gives you real serenity and peace of mind?

I don't know if you have noticed yet.. But the "classical" approach to happiness =pleasure just doesn't work.   If you just get all the money and all the sex and all the yachts and houses etc..... Sure that is a relatively better condition than begging for food as a homeless person... So there is definitely a direction towards happiness.. But you don't actually believe that's what life is All about don't you?

Also ... There is what's known as hedonic treadmill... as a person makes more money.. expectations and desires rise in tandem.. which results in no permanent gain in happiness.  Because now what used to make you super happy barely dabbles with your senses anymore. So you have to chase something bigger and bigger.... And it never ends.

Also we live in a world of duality. There is no night without day. No cold without hot. No high without a low. You can't just capture your happy moments and play them in repeat forever.. Life flows.. Everything passes. Impermanence is another thing. No matter what you do and where you go.. You are always back to baseline. Think of all your happy moments in the past.. All gone as if never even happened. Now you have to chase them again. And so on. You are literally haunting a mirage and you know it.. But you keep doing it anyways. Because you can't help it. The programmed "needs". You "need" stuff constantly. You need air.. Water.. Food.. Safety.. Comfort.. Pleasure.. Approval.. Meaning.. Purpose.. Value.. Etc etc.  The last three ones are not found out there somewhere. So you have to make them up. And you deep down know you are making them up.. So you never actually find them.

Just few thoughts.

Share some insights about the nature of happiness.. Desire.. Attachments.. The human condition.. Etc.

The desire to go beyond the mundane is what creates unhappiness.

Sit and be happy. If you can't do that, you will never be happy.

You are God. You are Truth. You are Love. You are Infinity.

This may sound airy-fairy, but I'd say true happiness is flowing with life. Learning appreciating even the small everyday things. Seeing problems as a chance to grow. Having an authentic purpose does help.

In short, life-long learning and enjoying the process.

@Someone here

Our true state of being is peace; happiness is a human, emotional manifestation of peace — if one is not peaceful, they can never really be happy.

Peace is a no-emotion, and one way peace can be felt is through our relation with the other things.

Peace comes with unity — and once someone has realised that, everything they do in this human form (duality) will result in true happiness.

The concept of happiness requires another — and peace requires oneness — therefore, if you realise the another is also you, happiness arises.

You have to see that the mundane and the magic are the same thing. The mundane is magic which you're used to experiencing. Inside and outside are one. And this is happiness. This is infinite power and wellness.

Separate happiness from success. They are not the same thing but sometimes they can overlap.

At first happiness and success might overlap but there will come a point it will diverge.

For me just being happy with nothing was not possible. I achieved some personal success and it made me happy but I didn't attach to it knowing the happiness is only temporary.

It is like breathing in (meditation) and breathing out(manifestation). Both are important. You can learn from both.

@Leo Gura You wrote before that not expressing oneself creatively and just being happy in the moment is an error as that is a limited understanding of what happiness is.

Why is it a limited understanding?

Happiness = no desire = accept things as they are = no ego (ego=desire for change)

Money can make you happier since it could stop you desire of making money. But what actually happens most of the time is when people become reach they aim to get even more and more money.

You mistake getting what you want with being happy. These are two different things.
The rush that you feel when you get things your way is called "winning" and it is in opposition to "losing".

Sometimes, you can get things your way, but sometimes you have to alter your course.
Happiness is freedom from opposites.

Wrong.

While it is certainly true that many thoughts we have are beliefs, which are either fantasy, hearsay, or knowledge, we also experience the world in our unique way and can express this experience honestly. In this expression lies what many fail to find: self-worth. You will never be valuable through the roles you perform in other people's lives. You can only be valuable through the very fact that you yourself find yourself important enough to express your depth. This is the true purpose of language: to describe what we experience with honesty and authenticity.

If you cannot see or accept that, then you are simply expressing your self-hatred, which, to be honest, is just oozing from your OP.

Bearing with the conditioned in gentleness, fording the river with resolution, not neglecting what is distant, not regarding one's companions; thus one may manage to walk in the middle. H11L2

It's a state of mind that that can be easily achieved with a healthy human body & mind. But otherwise, the hardest thing to get.

It has absolutely nothing to do with any material possessions or other people or the outside world.

If you have no confidence in yourself, you are twice defeated in the race of life. But with confidence you have won, even before you start.” -- Marcus Garvey

Happiness is your nature. It is not wrong to desire it. What is wrong is seeking it outside when it is inside.

Yeah, because happiness is a thought.

"Happiness" is basically derived from the state of no thoughts. But happiness doesn't mean anything.

And also is funny when I hear gurus like Spira day that happiness is what we are or our true nature. Lol.
