Why does Leo stay in America?

84 posts in this topic

The less corrupt a country is, the easier it is to self-actualize.

I'm not saying it's wrong to live in America. But given its corruption and the option to move to less corrupt countries, why does Leo decide to stay in America?

If you live in America, why do you stay? Have you considered moving?

@Vision Where do you think he should move to? Something Scandinavian? Norway? Denmark?

How? By whining that things aren't left wing enough? LMFAO

One needs to be clear whether one's goal is attaining a fulfilling career, or realising the Self. If it's the latter, I see a lot more masters emerge from India than Scandinavia. Almost like there's a spiritual downside to being in a comfortable environment.

'If you don't like it in America, why don't you just leave?' is perhaps the most idiotic response imaginable as a reply to social criticism, and the fact that its used so repetitively by Conservatives is indicative of low consciousness and lazy thinking of people who subscribe to right wing ideologies.

What it's implying is that we shouldn't put the time and effort in to identify ways that our country isn't living up to its potential, and that instead of working to fix things that instead we should just give up. That instead of confronting difficulties we should flee from them.

So not only is that line of thinking lazy and dishonest, but it's also cowardly.

@Vision

I won’t say I haven’t thought about it. It’s hard not to watch what is going on here and consider anything less.

Ultimately though, having critiques is not a justifiable reason to leave. Imagine if we did that in relationships.

Really what we need to do is learn to resolve these conflicts. If you love a country, that’s what you would do.

You say less challenge = more growth?

Hmmmm.....

There's also just.. logistics.

You may not like it, but this is what peak performance looks like.

I visited Las Vegas just prior Summer, what a dump!

Did you venture outside the main city? Lake Mead and hiking is beautiful in that area. Especially in the winter when the air is warm and dry. There is a lot of beauty in desert biomes.

Name a country run by humans that has absolutely no corruption. Paleeze. With a law abiding executive administration, and Justice department the remedies are in place. The American experiment has the latitude to evolve in a less corrupt future The assault of the Trump administration against the rule of law would have reached new lows if given another four years. If this election demonstrated one thing for sure, a lot  of the lower SD stages voted. Leo's right we're still in the middle ages.

@Leo GuraIf your impressions of Detroit came from Robocop, I'll parallel that with my impressions of Vegas coming from Fear and Loathing  xD

I've always wondered not why does Leo lives in America, because even in America there are nice places to live, but why does he stay in Las Vegas?

The US isn't that corrupt given its size, demographics, history, etc. 23rd least corrupt out of 198 on CPI.

Find me a country comparable in population or even close in total GDP (the amount of money flowing around) that is less corrupt.  It's not even a contest.  Look at China, Brazil, India.

I mean could it improve? Certainly, but the fact that it's 23 is nothing short of a miracle.  Better than some large European countries (Italy, Spain, tied with France.) I mean would you want to live in the 23rd least corrupt country or the #1 least corrupt, given all the other advantages? It's not like China (80th) or Russia (137th) bad.

If you are rich, America is one of the best places to live. If you're poor, not so much.

You can't just make decisions based on gross aggregates. You need to factor in all the specifics of your situation. There are shit holes in every city/state/country, and great spots in every city/state/country.

For example, living in California doesn't make sense for me because of the state income tax. For how much I pay in taxes it is cheaper for me to book a hotel in Cali for 6 months of the year than to own a house there.

Orange County would be my fave place to live, but it's wastefully expensive.

Isn't a high state income tax a "progressive" policy? :P

It is, but when there are other options easily available, one is foolish not to use them. I pay a lot of tax as it is.

The point of a progressive tax is making it federal so that it cannot be escaped.

In the end, progressive policies hurt my wallet, cause I'm rich. So I subscribe to them but I get little out of them. For example, I have not gotten any money from the stimulus packages. Not saying I should, but at the same time it's hard to be enthusiastic about policy that does not benefit me.

Most people who are socialist are socialist simply because they are poor. As soon as they become rich they will start question socialism a lot more. Vice versa with capitalists. Especially if you work hard for your money.
