Increased intellect through spirituality

I've often heard from different spiritual teachers, that their everyday, mundane problemsolving intelligence increased along with their spiritual evolution. 

My spiritual attainments improved a lot of different areas in my life, but the capacities of my intellect was not among them. I'd be interested in how to acces this.
